  • I'm just near a B&N in California right now. What book + edition is it?

It’s the special edition one. Apparently has some extra chapter/endings.

Not sure if it’s a web exclusive though.

—— edit —- it’s not actually available yet to collect. They are pre-orders, limited edition. She would like a copy, although it’s not important she receives it promptly after release, as long as she gets a copy. Kids eh?!

    Thanks though! Offer much appreciated.

  • Hah, I guess you'll have to try again in July when it comes out!

  • Does anyone fancy any of these? The tiny blue one which is hard to make out is "A Shining" by John Fosse.
All free to good home but collection preferred from SE20 or E14. Cat toy not available.

    Edited to actually include books.

  • Has anyone read Tender Is The Flesh?
I’m struggling to work out how I feel about it. It was very shocking and disturbing, which I was expecting, and it really stuck with me and made me think.

  • Hadn't heard of it, but on reading up on it, it sounds challenging

  • Yep. Coincided with our decision to go vegetarian. I'm not saying it was solely responsible for it, but we'd been considering it for a while and then we both read it and I think it was the thing that pushed us over the edge.

  • Ha, thats interesting. It's something my wife and I had chatted about occasionally over the last couple of years, but never seriously considered. We watched a couple of documentaries recently that sort of horrified us - stuff we knew in theory, but seeing it laid out in detail hit it home. Been vegetarian for a few weeks now and I'm not really missing meat at all so far.

This book kind of galvanised my decision. My wife decided against reading it after my description :-D

  • Has anyone tried to illustrate Iain Bank's 'The Bridge'? Fanfic, cartoon, film whatever...
Finding it hard to get the visuals right in my head.

  • Finished Ian Hibbell's book, now reading Spannered ( thanks @eskay )

  • If Useless can't help feel free to dm me - until recently I worked for S&S who publish that, I can probably ask someone to request a copy from the US offices but not 100%.

  • Ah nice hope it takes you back :)

  • Well, not to Bristol. But there's certain character traits that definitely crossed international dance party lines :D

  • Iain Bank's 'The Bridge'

It's inspired by the Forth Rail Bridge, so just imagine a much bigger version with accommodation, defensive armaments, different level rail decks etc built into the structure.

  • How are you finding the book in general? I probably read it about 10 years ago and remember really liking it. I've always found him a bit hit and miss though.

  • How are you finding the book in general?

Haven't gotten far, but it has a nice tone to it. I've always liked the combo of tricky subject matter conveyed with fairly easy going prose.

  • I haven't read it for years, think I will re-read next. Always one of my favourites of his

  • That book really messed with my head!

  • I'd be interested in the Alexei style if you'd post?

  • Yeah of course! DM me your address.

  • After going against the grain and enjoying Annihilation, Authority has to be one of the worst books I've ever read.

It doesn't make sense, it's hard to read, it completely changes 1/2 way through with no explanation, the author is obsessed with the word 'terrior' to the point I groaned every other page....

    0/10.

But still part of me wants to read the last one, which happens to be the longest of the three.

  • The 3rd is better than the 2nd. Not as good as Annihilation though.

  • The better bet is to just watch Tarkovsky's Stalker though.

  • Aye, I was living only a few miles from that when I read the book, so visualising things was no problem.

  • Re-listening to the Audio book of Perfect Golden Circle: Ben Myers

    It’s a fucking delight

I’m doing this because while I Hate the Internet : Jarrett Kobek was excellent, it was a bit of a grind and I want something less bleak
