  • I finished Climbers, was a bit disappointed overall. I liked the writing, but not a lot happened.

  • not a lot happened

    that's the best part

  • I've just finished Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates. Would highly recommend. Beautifully written and incredibly melancholic. If anyone wants a lightly nibbled copy let me know...

  • ^ Loved Revolutionary Road. Mrs GB went and read all the Yates she could find because of it.

Just finished the Phillipa Perry book (The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read). Certainly has made me think about how I talk to my 10yo.

Next is the next book club book: What I Loved by Siri Hustvedt

Then I've got a couple of cycling related books and then a massive book of Cheever short stories (I've read The Swimmer from it but that's it).

Once that's done I've got a huge new "to read" pile including The Time Machine, Chernobyl and American Pastoral amongst others.

  • Yeah I loved it too! I don't keep many books but this one was definitely going on the shelf to read in the future. Oh well, it's the only thing the new pup has chewed so far, she clearly has good taste.

  • I'd take a nibbled book if you are happy to post. Can swap something in return

These are all available for swaps

  • I'll send you a message!

  • Bukowski and Dick both gone for a swap.

PM me if you want to swap any of the others.

  • If you like comedy. Tom sharpe

I read all the Tom Sharpe books many, many years ago.

Whilst I am sure he would be considered by many to be a 'lowbrow' writer, it was his work more than any other that taught me how pleasure could be derived from reading. To that end, I will be forever in his debt.

  • Yes, used to love Tom Sharpe when I was probably a bit too young to be reading about inflatable sex dolls etc. Blott on the Landscape was my favorite.

  • Completely agree. I’ve never really found anyone that comes close to him. Farcical pervert comedy at its finest.

  • Hate to blast a thread with an ebay link... but i have begun listing the 100+ cycling books i have. There's truly a huge mix of stuff, from bog standard L Armstrong biographies all they way to museum grade 1800s stuff.. Also if anyone is looking for anything particular feel free to send me a message!

will be uploading new batches every day for the next week or so.

    cheers!

  • Same here. I do at times wonder whether I should re-read them or it would turn out to be disappointing.

  • Was Easter Parade her favourite Yates?

The swimmer and the enormous radio are both great. I think both are on the new yorker writer's voice podcast.

  • I’m half way through my sister the serial killer.

  • Just finished the Phillipa Perry book (The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read). Certainly has made me think about how I talk to my 10yo.

That is a superb book for any parent's.

  • Picked this up from the alley bookshop in Peckham, it's been quite an educational experience so far

  • I've juts finished The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford, after being strongly persuaded it was worthwhile. I really liked it - an interesting mix of jolly-posh-family japes and then some quietly devastating parts.

Now on to The Millstone by Margaret Drabble, which I'm enjoying so far despite it being a little cold and bleak.

Please say that it's also a bit drab. :)

  • I forgot I had bought this, delivered just now.
