  • My girlfriend bought me 1Q84 by Murakami for my birthday. Looking forward to reading it!

Nice, let us know how you get on

Of his work, wild sheep chase stays in my memory strongly; disquieting

  • Just started Herzog by Saul Bellow and I'm fucking loving it

  • Half way into Atlas Shrugged. I need a palate cleanser ready to go at the end. Suggestions?

  • Ulysses

  • Conan Doyle fest:
    The White Company [epic]
The Lost World [believed it to be a true account when I was 7] [also epic]
Sir Nigel [just started it, epic]

  • Hello! Currently drifting through Joyce's Ulysees.

Can anyone recommend any guides to California? I need two for christmas presents:

    1. literary, beat poets, stuff like that (mom)
    2. geological, nature stuff (dad)
  • Really enjoyed David Millar's Racing Through the Dark

Now reading Ben Rockett's There and Back about his breaking the LEJOGLE record.

also have Peter Ackroyd's "London - The Biography" and "Naked Trader" on the go...

  • I'm looking for a good book that will explain cryptograpy to me.

There's on by Simon Singh that looks good, but are there better primers for it out there?

  • You could try Hyqwlamuyt Sozsmailpbsja by W3zladr Pmusnx.

  • Ulysses

The Book of Dave - Will Self.
So good, one of the best I've ever read.

  • Can someone please recommend me a brilliant modern fiction novel set in contemporary London?

Un-London (It's London and unlondon) and Angelmaker, which IIRC is mostly set in London.

  • White Teeth? Is a few years old now

  • A good London based book which is even older is Barbara Vine's (aka Ruth Rendell) King Solomon's Carpet. It's crime based and centres around the London Underground, in particular the circle line.

  • I need some books to read in hospital. Last time, I tried to get too heavy and serious, so the result was I read nothing but trashy magazines. I don't want chick-lit, just not War & Peace. Any ideas?

I'm ashamed to say I am yet to read Bike Snob's The Enlightened Cyclist which hatbeard ever so kindly gave me in JUNE! So I'll start with that.

  • Dracula! it's a romp
    Midnight's Children
    Famous Last Words
    Stand On Zanzibar
    Valis
    Life After

  • Terry Pratchett stuff, not to heady and pretty awesome. If you've not read 'Going Postal' pick that up and 'Making Money' they are fantastic.

Anything by PG Wodehouse keeps me smiling, easy to dip in and out of too!

I bought Ulysses after Stephen Fried Bacon tried to explain it on one of his words shows. Sounded trippy as fuck.

Found "Going Postal" in a second hand store last week. On shelf, awaiting consumption via eyeballs.
