I love that Ritchey!

Full of great details. I like the seatpost set-up, and the strap for comfortable shouldering of the bike (aided by the clever rear brake + cable positioning).
Total porn!

Only U brake in that possition were useless it any standard UK slop n grime moments the one on my old bike from the late 80's would regularly clog with shit. On the few times we did get a run of dry weather they were far more powerful than canti's. So UK fail but Richie was in Cali so on his part win.

I understand now the Ritchey is hard-core function and vintage porn for some. It just doesn`t do nada for me hence me posting it here. I still strongly dislike the bike, sorry*.

The Ritchey is ace, obviously showing its age as all the older mtbs tend to. What is the deal with the spring on the seatpost though?

What is the deal with the spring on the seatpost though?
You flip the seatpost QR while riding, and the seat drops onto the upper collar giving a low seat height for descending, close the QR to secure it. Then, at the bottom of the hill, you do the same but lifting buttock, and the spring pushes the seat post back up to your climbing position and you close the QR again.

what is that black thing which appears to be bolted to the TT and DT?
-
• #8465
it's where a frame bag sits

Thats interesting - thanks mdcc. Interesting idea but I can sort of see why it didn't catch on.
The black thing is to aid in shouldering hte bike - makes it more comfy to sling it over your shoulder, like a hammock - sometimes has a bag in them too.
As an aside, I love all these little extra's you sometimes see on the older bikes. The solutions to problems can be so pragmatic, though not always very good from a riding point of view - like that seat bolt thing (how many people would really change the height of their saddle on the move via QR on the move?). The very early suspension bikes have been mentioned here before, but some of the ideas were mental then, all kinds of imaginative uses of elastomers and pivots.

It never caught on big, but there are still at least a couple of manufacturers making telescopic seat posts to achieve the same thing, including some which are actuated by a bar mounted lever for on-the-fly seat height changes.

http://www.bikepro.com/arch_products/seatposts/ahiter.shtmlTo complete the effect, you could also have the SR MT100 adjustable layback post with a QR for easy on-the-trail adjustment. I think there was an MT50 version with 50mm of adjustment for less radical position changes
