The limits of the platform (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_Epsilon_platform#Vehicles) mean that the 9-3 was never going to be very different from a Vauxhall Vectra

All the platform does is define drivetrain layout, and roughly define the track, wheelbase, and vehicle weight (or the general vehicle package, in other words). It has almost nothing to do with the surface treatment; there's no technical reason why they couldn't have made the 9-5 look like an updated 99. For example, the Chevy HHR and Vauxhall Astra are both built on the same platform, but couldn't look more different - even their basic proportions are different.

Really? The colour scheme (on the frame, at least) is the only bit that I don't hate.

White components and matching car really kill it for me.

I have a feeling that they followed a brief from the car manufacturer or their PR firm when it came round to the colour scheme.
