Because putting those wheels in that frame is a far better investment in speed than putting 50s wheels in a modern frame.

Maybe putting it in anti was harsh. I just think it's a stupid build. On an other note, I've seen a few gas pipe fixehz around Dublin with comically High bbs. So high the chain stays slope upwards. Anyone else seen these/ Know what they are?

that bike sucks but it could so easily be made into a work of genius if the owner simply fitted mudguards on the mudguard eyelets...

^Of course, but why would you buy that frame if you wanted to go fast? Why not go the whole hog with disc/trispoke/aerobars? The point being that 50s bikes look better with old wheels, new frames look better and go faster with modern ones.

If you only want to go as fast as Nelson Vails, 531 is fine.

It's stiff enough, and probably has lower CdA than many modern fat tubed aluminium and crabon fribé frames.

^^I saw some Chinese frames somewhere that looked like someone had noticed fgfs frames selling and copied them without understanding why they're like that or how to do it properly.
