  • Frothy coffee? a dry Cappuccino? a Viennese Malange?

  • If any of you lovely folk have a grinder for sale drop me a PM. Pretty please.

  • Had an epic session descaling and backflushing my gaggia and cleaning out my porlex last night. After all that, didn't get a chance to taste the results this morning! Am sure it will have been worth it.

  • It's a coffee-based cross between a milkshake and a Mr Whippy in a cup with a straw.

It's not for those who worry about whether it's single origin or not, but on a hot day I think I prefer it to a plain old iced coffee and definitely better than the ice-based things that the other chains produce.

  • Could be nice, will try one next summer when passing again.

Had a cold brew Square Mile Kenyan from NTP the other day, was very satisfying.

  • Quite liking Grumpy Mule Yirgacheffe. Coming from (much) darker roasts should I be grinding coarser and steeping longer?

  • Don't steep longer, just up the amount of coffee if you want it stronger. That said Yirgacheffe is IMO generally ok on milder infusions as there is a lots flavour in it.

Just started a bag of Kochere Yirgacheffe today. Damn, it is good. A little of strawberryness but very tangy and very winey. Done as an espresso roast but works fine as filter as well.

  • August is Invent your own blend from hasbean. Sent 4 small bags of different beans, an empty 250g bag with blank label and some colouring pencils.

Bonkers. Winning blend & label is sold in October...

  • Just ordered HB Lemoncillo "Funkier", Yirgacheffe Kochere Debo, and Kenya Maganjo.

Fingers-crossed for the Kenyan having super blackcurrant flavours.

I'm still boasting about how good that Monmouth Costa Rican Natural is. Yummy!

Might have to get on that! We run hasbean where i work, and i have to say ive been much more impressed with their single origin stuff than any of their blends, but i might try and work something out that suits my tastes a little more with this.

  • They're marketing coffee to children now?

I'm coming to the same conclusion. Today I was using 20g per cup and it's getting better. Steeping for 45s or 1min, using water at ~ 85*, grind I've not changed.

Tastes very good with a smidge of sugar.*

  • A new cafe (178 on New Cross Road) opened over the road last month, it looks alright from the outside and I'm out of beans so thought I'd give it a try. If anyone else has the same idea, don't.

They're serving HB Jailbreak so I had hopes of at least a half decent cup. Just watching the guy make the drink I could tell it wasn't going to be great (holding the portafilter at arms reach and tamping 'mid air' was a highlight). The result being a flatwhite that looks like it was made by a vending machine and one that tastes only marginally better.

Time for a ride over to Monmouth for a bean resupply.

  • Finally got a barista to do me a mushroom cloud

  • From here if you're close by

    Yessssssss

    ;)

  • La la la la la lavazza
    Cheap and consistently average
    Lovely

  • Yup... i bought a kilo of Lavazza Red for £3.48 at Sainsburys the other day. Bargain. Means I can go mental trying to dial in my broken Krups grinder.

  • Microcosm has moved office, which means we no longer need our beloved Rancilio Silvia and cafe grinder.

They're both in working order, though the Rancilio could probably do with a de-scale (tamp & portafilter are included although not shown in the photo).

If you're interested, let Velocio or myself know... they can be picked up from near Waterloo for £100. The main idea is to send them to a good home with minimal hassle, hence the price.

  • Dibs, will collect

  • I already PM'd, sorry.

  • :P Not really.
