  • that's what I took away from the study.

  • Ha, pretty much.

I'd just say ignore that study, start using paper filters anyway because they're good, and if you're really worried stop drinking coffee for a bit.

  • stop drinking coffee for a bit.

  • Emphasis on really worried.

  • Margarine in coffee?

  • Just modded the GC with a Silvia steam wand.

What is it that makes the Silvia wand so much better? Is it the flexibility?

  • The head is different, but most importantly its long enough to reach into a pitcher without the turbofrother attachment, which gives you zero control over your milk quality. The stock panarello wand is too short by itself.

  • I cut my panarello into a spout with a dremmel. Works quite well.

Hard to find it otherwise in Malaysia :(

    waste of an expensive bike...

  • A friend of mine just pointed me to this after he'd had a less than perfect cholesterol test result back..

*Moore’s interest in cafestol began several years ago when his wife read an article on coffee’s effect on cholesterol. She suggested that he might change his brewing method, which involved a permanent coffee filter. The paper filters, the article suggested, removed the coffee oils, which contain cafestol.

*No idea whether the evidence stacks up but it could convince me to move to paper filters on the aeropress rather than the reusable metal filter I use now. Anyone heard of this before?

It was a study done on mice 6 years ago.. any new data? any human tests?

  • Studies of caffeine consumption in mice have shown a marked increase in seritonin production, and commensurate decrease in seratonin reuptake, if combined with nicotine inhalation at the same time.

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/5531800845

The mice are happier when they are allowed to have a fag with their morning espresso. Particularly the mice from France.

  • "There is a twist to this aspect of the coffee story, because cafestol and kahweol may also have some health benefits that are lost when they're filtered out. The research is in the preliminary stages, but cafestol and kahweol could have some anticancer effects and be good for the liver."

  • Has anyone here tried coffee from Caravan, Exmouth Market?

I've currently got their Sidamo beans which are good, though I'd like to try their other Kenyan and Yirgacheffe too.

  • just subscribed to the Has Bean guest espresso subscription. £71 for 12 months (~£5.90 a bag).

This months is the aptly named Hangover Cure.

it's not bad, it's a bit of an unusual cup but I only just opened it so it'll probably change as I mess with the grind and after it rests a little.

big thing I'm getting from it at the moment is a kind of funky aftertaste that while nothing like the strawberry bubble gum of SM's Jirmiwachu it kind of leaves the same coffee aftertaste that did which is that little bit fruity, this one is kind of like a mildly lemon'y earl gray kind of thing. so far it's not bad. not exceptional but not bad.

the bag is numbered 228/1000 so looks like it's a real limited run as it only came up this week.

  • ^^ Yes, a few months ago although I think it was espresso roast. It was good.

This is nice if you like Yirgacheffe. Red liquorice coffee!

  • I've just picked up bag #75 of the Hangover Cure from North Tea Power (they've 4 kilo's to use as house blend next week), looking forward to Weds which is earliest I'll be able to try them.

  • look on eBay for an ex commercial grinder. be patient and you can find a £400 - £500 model 3 - 5 years old for £50. hang out on CoffeeGeek.com and see what the current trend/view is. good luck

  • I recently jumped ship from HasBean to Allpress in Redchurch St. Bunch of Kiwi's doing the roasting. Have found I much prefer the Allpress espresso. If you sign up as a business 1kg bags are 50% cheaper!

Cool, cheers. Interesting that James Gourmet Coffee lists coffees as being roasted for a given brewing technique. I kind of like that.

What I really want just now is a Yirgacheffe that's got that serious rich stewed fruit flavour from Monmouth which I had over the summer. Wish I'd frozen some.

  • I'm afraid I'm very unconvinced by Has Bean. I got some Blake Mk5 as a Christmas present but I'm not really feeling it as much as Square Mile (for example).

I'm about to brew the last bit with an Aeropress, maybe I'll work out what it is about it then.

@mands sweetshop is now back as a permanent addition at Sq Mile, but I think they are varying it with each batch. It was bloody good back in mid-December.

  • Hey, thanks for the advice on how to try to fix my beat up old machine. Working loads better after fiddling with the brew head, back flushing and changing seals.
