  • Just ordered a milk jug and thermometer from has bean to go with the coffee machine i was freecycled by a distant relation.

    it's only a morphy richards knockoff of a gaggia classic but without really messing with grind/dose/tamping too much has made a semi-drinkable shot or two.

    the steam wand is ok for someone who knows nothing about this sort of thing but having to steam the milk in a mug just wasn't cutting it.

    am hoping by the time i get the hang of this machine the gaggia classic will have come down in price again and I can finally grab one.

  • I've been all about the Taylors these past 6 months. Went native and dropped this Afghan coffee that one of the boys sold me.. pretty sure it wasn't coffee as I was tripping balls all night.

    I'm into the grinder scene back home though; picked up a wicked antique that needed some TLC but a quick adjustment produced a smooth and workable grain. So hot right now. Photos to come soon no doubt

  • Went to Coffee Plant at lunchtime. Nice staff, who were happy to talk and then give a couple of sample espresso's.. also a good selection of beans and really pretty damn cheap. Have 3 sample 200g bags to try before buying something in bulk for home (my house is going through a disgusting amount of coffee a week at the moment..).

    Should also mention that a couple of months ago I got a kilo of Climpsons and Sons summer espresso blend, was fucking awesome. I don't think I realised quite how good it was at the time - Union felt very bland afterwards.

  • Fucking Allpress. 5 people moping about rather than serving the growing queue, then having to explain what a fucking aeropress is, then waiting a good 5 minutes to get my coffee ground and finally I get it handed to me as 'stovetop'. Stovetop? Yeah same thing mate.

    Maybe it is, but if you're selling a premium product please hire staff accordingly

  • The latest Kenyan by Square Mile that has been shipped up to coffee shop here is lovely. Didn't note it's name, was brewed in aeropress.

    However, actually on watching it, it still has one of the main problems I have with a french press: over-extraction.

  • I think the small version (featured in the video) would be fine, it's just a big cup. But the large version, esp. if you made the whole pot for yourself, would be a struggle by the time it had sat/steeped.

    Personally I don't have a problem with decanting my french press brews to a jug once the extraction is done.

    Quite right on the first point - but extra washing up : ( Also extra boiled water to heat the second vessel.

    Think I've solved it. Double filters, 5 seconds stir, then quickly press, stop when all water is out and press out the air in to the sink. Removes almost all sediment and gives a decent cup, especially if I top it up with a bit more water.

    No more allpress for me though, which is a shame as I actually really like the flavour

  • Bought myself 500g of monmouth espresso to practice with on my new coffee machine (cheap morphy richards thing) but when I asked for it to be ground for a home espresso machine they've turned it to a fine dust and it's almost impossible to get a palatable shot from it. no matter what I do it's horrifically bitter and tastes burnt. have tried high dose/low dose. hard tamp/loose-ish tamp. anyone got any suggestions for how to salvage it.

    if not it looks like i'll have to do something similiar to the post above and run it through my aeropress although that tastes just as bad at the moment.

  • already have one and am using it on the last of my bag of beans from st ali (my coffee stash for at work) at the moment while i get the monmouth espresso drinkable.

    but i really don't have time in the morning to grind fresh beans in the porlex as it is a complete faff to use if you're in a rush to get out the door. i already spend as much time prepping the machine, making me and emma a coffee and cleaning up after as I do jumping in the shower and getting ready for work.

    have shower and then get rocky to grind the beans, get my cereal ready and then sylvia is just about ready to brew

    hoping to upgrade silvia with a PID soon

  • a gaggia classic is in the works as soon as my settlement cheque comes through and I'll probably splurge on a grinder at the same time (spent all day clearing out the kitchen cupboards today so we have a bit of room at the moment so i may be able to swing it with her indoors).

    don't mind having a process for the morning but standing there for 5 minutes turning a handle doesn't fit into that process for me in any shape/form.

  • Need to pull down the S24. Leaking from a perished gasket I think. Problem is I'm drinking bugger all coffee at the moment and it's not worth the hassle. Need to wait until desperation sets in.
