  • They've always arrived on Saturday morning for me. Why didn't you get them sent to your house? Herne package fits through most letterboxes

  • Because if they didn't fit through my letterbox then I'd spend the next three months at the Royal Mail depot. If they're sent to the office then some beans just land on my desk once a week. Was told they'd arrive Friday. It's no biggie if they always arrive on Saturday, it just means that this weekend I won't have any.

  • Just heard back, they're on their way. Bit miffed because I emailed after I ordered and asked if they'd arrive by Friday - just so I knew if I should buy some beans for the weekend - he said yeah. Still, #firstworldproblems...

  • Was the Square Mile Kenya an espresso roast (blue label I think)? They roast a touch darker for single origin espresso. If not it'll be a roast optimised for brewed coffee and I'd imagine it'll be pretty light to highlight the acidity.

Either way, it'll be a world apart from the way Old Algerian roast their Santos beans - literally dripping in oils usually. It took me a while to adapt to the taste of less aggressively roasted beans, but now I'd have trouble reverting. Having said that, I haven't really gone for much African stuff, except a blueberry-rich Harrar.

I limit myself to American coffee. Preferable Bolivian though El Salvador is my next choice if there's none available. I thought I'd branch out a few months ago so bought a Malawian coffee. Was quite a cheap £4.50/250g compared to my usual ~£6/250g but it wasn't very nice.

  • I wouldn't write off all African coffees, even if the ultra-bright / floral stuff isn't your thing. I was glad a tried the Ethiopian Harrar. Like eating a mouthful of chocolate muffin and blueberry muffin at the same time. The acidity was almost as muted as a typical Indian coffee.

Either way, lowering the dose can get a grip on the brightness, as can aiming to brew at a higher temperature, though that can be tricky on a single boiler machine. Read up about temp surfing the Gaggia Classic.

i don't really know. It looked quite light brown to me compared to the algerian coffee
    one.

Yeah, what they said. When I had trouble with sourness and acidity back in the day with my mokka pot, I went for South American coffees as a lot of them are quite soft and chocolate-y. Thing is though, it can get a little bit boring in my opinion.

The last Africans I've had were Kenyan and Ethiopian. The Kenyan was balanced but really rich. Almost had a taste like mixed dried fruit to it. Really nice.

Those beans are complete coffee nirvana for me.

  • We're about to run out of beans.

Not sure what happens next, as we can't afford new ones, but the morning coffee is such a routine and almost necessary part of the day.

Only saving grace is that I have a packet of sealed grounds which at least will keep us going for another fortnight before we're totally out of coffee.

  • I have a bag of square mile you're more than welcome to?

I bought it thinking I was out but found a tin with a stash I'd squirrelled away and want to get through them first.

  • I think I might try cold turkey. I suspect I drink too much coffee anyway.

Thanks for the offer though, appreciated.

  • I'm placing an order with Hasbean soon, does anyone have a recommendation for beans that work well for espresso and aeropress?

I've almost finished 2 bags of Jailbreak and would like to try something quite different (but not too hard to brew).

  • Maybe have a look on coffeeforums.co.uk. I've bought plenty from them before, but not for a while.

I wouldn't read far too much into what's written on some coffee shop websites as it's sometimes like reading an OTT restaurant menu."Slaps a Black Forest gateau in your face, while simultaneously shoving a Sherbert Dib-Dab up your arse.". Thanks.

  • Just got my free batch from eightpointnine. Tastes like shit in espresso form, but make it up into a flat white and it's pretty good.

Any reason why it would have been so foul on it's own?

    Anyone?

  • Milk can hide a lot of bad flavours (just look at Starbucks/Nero/Costa). If it tastes like shit on its own then it probably is just bad coffee.

  • Yup, crappy coffee. The gimmicky marketing set my alarm bells ringing.

  • could we pass the hat around and get velocio some good beans? i wouldn't want to be without my daily morning routine

    Was thinking about this also

  • i'm happy to put in an order at hasbean. If 7-8 of us chips in a quid each we're golden

  • I'm about to run out of Cohibas and Hennessy.

Not sure what happens next, as I can't afford new ones, but the evening brandy and cigar is such a routine and almost necessary part of the day.

Oh well, I've got some roll-ups and special-brew.........

  • "can't afford" coffee?

    What drama is this?

I'm happy to chip in... Or get LMNH to bung you free coffee beans in exchange for an advert?

had you started a bike forum that i spent a lot of time at, spending a lot of your spare time making it run smoothly, de-fusing arguments between members, then having the balls to bet your future on it knowing the fact you'll barely scrape by in the coming months / years - then I'd buy you beans too

on the other hand, you taught me loads about coffee, so i would probably do so anyway

    I dunno, maybe this?
