  • Perfect crema pin works a treat! May take the naked basket back as it shouldn't be leaking like that, seems like it's just a bad fit to me...

Running out of Lavazza pre-ground so will pick up some nice Monmouth or Square Mile decaff beans tomorrow, am gonna order a grinder right now... :]

  • My single basket arrived but I'm struggling to get a good shot when using it. I thought because there would be less coffee I'd need to make the grind a little finer. I put my Porlex one notch tighter but that just totally choked up the machine. I then slacked it off again but the same result. To get any kind of coffee flow the grinder needs to be on 4 from top (coarser than I was using with the double basket).

It doesn't seem to make any sense to me, is my pump knackered? Maybe it's just scaled up, I put some descaler through it last week but could have maybe not left it in long enough.

  • Just had an email from Staples offering a free coffee maker with an online order over £39. This is going to be a quality bit of kit, no?

  • it appears to have a speedometer on it.

  • Might be useful. Reasonable price for some slim digital scales...

You'd need to check the resolution is down to 0.1g, but great deal nonetheless.

I bought some 200g digital scales on eBay for £3.75 inc. postage which work well.

How much coffee did you put in the basket? Singles can be more difficult than doubles. There is more pressure presneted by the basket itslef to compensate for the relative lack of resistance presented by only a single dose of coffee.

  • lovely first aeropress cup. I used some of the Gaitania Colombia beans from St Ali. I kept the Porlex on 3 clicks from the finest which works well with my machine, what do other people use for an aeropress or does it depend on the beans?

  • shit photo

  • Looks good in that there's plenty of crema there. Can't comment on the colour of it is the whites are crushed in your photo. I'll maybe take a crap photo of the shot I'm about to pour before I start nightshifts.

  • well it tasted nice. also steamed some milk yesterday, worked ok.

varying amounts from 9g-12g, it didn't seem anywhere near full though.

I might just go back to the double

  • I don't think I've ever used a single other than to stand the tamper up in. Double all the way.

It should probably be more like 6g - 10g for a single. 12g isn't far off what I often use for a double sometimes (ie. 14g).

The basket should remain fairly empty on the single with conservative doses, but just enough to tamp down before the basket narrows.

Here's a shitty cameraphone photo from a couple of hours ago, using slightly stale Origin beans:

May get myself a bottomless portafilter just for the hell of it.

  • Looks fine, I've got this one...

  • $$?

that dream farm products site is full of stuff my mrs would go mental over

  • If that's the Grindenstein I'd stay clear of it, find it too small and flimsy.

  • ^^ They have pizza scissors!

...and a thing designed for people who are to dumb to drink from a tap.
Why the heck does something like that win a red dot award, I don't get it..

  • bombcup: What did you use to insulate the boiler on your machine? Ta

  • How many notches back from all-the-way-tight do people have their Porlex grinders set up at? I ground some Monmouth Guatemalan decaff beans on the finest setting and the flow was a bit shit so will probably need to ease off a few clicks...

BTW the coffee tasted farking amazing! :D

  • I have mine set one back for Espresso roast. 23 second shots FTW.
