  • I have the M47, it genuinely does espresso grind as Ptown said, and it does it rapidly and reliably.

  • Tried some new beans I’ve never had before. Will report back.

  • I would consider selling on the J-Max that i bought off here (cant remember who from) if you're interested. It was excellent while I was travelling but a bit superfluous now that I'm back home with a Niche. Cup profile for filter was very similar on the J-max compared to the Niche and espresso is arguably better

  • Does anyone have or know anything about La Pavoni Puccino's? Are they any good? I would like to scratch the GC itch but they go for crazy money. How does it compare?

  • I use a knock grinder with my Pavoni, does a great job but a little slow maybe.

  • What's the going rate for a second hand Niche these days? Mate of mine is considering selling his.

  • Anyone who was interested in the 1zpresso Q Air, it's not quite as internally identical as I thought to the Q2 (and presumably X-Pro?) burrs.

Whether that's worth an extra £30 quid I dunno. After doing some V60s this weekend I'm still really, really happy with the Air.

  • I was about to buy one from AliExpress until I realised that it would cost about £65 anyway - the same price as it would be from Sigma coffee in the UK.
What’s the current go to grinder in the £100~ bracket for filter? Might upgrade my Timemore c2 and take that to work.

  • Quick question, if a grinder is creating an increase in fines, is it likely that needing a clean is causing it? Also acknowledge it's a downwards spiral because more fines = more need for cleaning.

The universe seems to be aligning that after watching a recent JH video where I saw the Lagom Mini for the first time and really liked it, my Svart seems to have really ramped up it's overproduction of fines and the filter choking problem I talked about before seems to have returned with a vengeance.

Will try cleaning the Svart more frequently before doing anything rash but you know what it's like when a little brain worm sets in.

  • As a fellow Svart owner I'm also looking at the Lagom. They're from Aus yeah? I couldn't find a way to actually buy one.

  • Oh you've gone about this a much cleverer way. I've convinced myself that I want one without actually working out whether I can get one.

  • I bought mine through the Lagom website. Been using it for over a year and really like it. Lead time from order to shipping was about five weeks and it arrived about a week after that. I’m guessing that will go out a bit now they’ve been featured by Hoffman.

I got the moonshine burrs as they are supposed to be more espresso biased.

  • I’m pretty sure cleaning it won’t reduce fines, that’s more to do with the burrs themselves.

  • I'm just finding it strange that gradually all the coffee I'm grinding is producing loads of fines. Before when I raised this issue it felt like it was just specific beans, and then I'd buy something different and they'd be normal, but now the last 5 bags of beans, different roasters, different countries, different processes, are all producing so many fines that the filter paper is choking and overflowing.

    Brewer is Sage Precision.

I've tried going down on the grind size massively and it's not really making a difference.

I haven't cleaned the burrs so far because spraying the beans to minimise static (which is bad on the Wilfa Svart) seems to do a really good job of keeping the burrs clean so they don't look scummy at all.

The only solution I have is to brew less coffee at a time but I might as well just chuck the precision brewer in the bin then and just use the clever dripper into a thermos. It worked great for so long and now I'm just getting this bullshit that's making my coffee taste bad.

  • It could be the burrs going blunt. Since the burrs in my Sage grinder contacted (after I followed that stupid advice to adjust the burrs closer) it's kicked out a lot of fines. It's a result of losing the sharp edges at the very fine end of the burr where it's most critical for a consistent grind. I really must replace them.

  • What's the life span of this sort of grinder.

Back of an envelope calculation suggests I've ground 30kg of coffee with it. Should do more than that?

  • I’d definitely give it a good clean if you’ve put that much coffee through. At least it would rule it out if nothing else.
I had a quick google though and other people seem to be saying the same as you about fines getting worse.

  • Check your messages

  • From looking at some videos of the Wilfa Svart it looks like the burr arrangement is the same as a Dualit grinder that I have. The burrs have got quite blunt after many years of use, but the top burr can also develop play in its holder, which would make it rattle. I shimmed mine with some very thin brass (coke can would work) to try to remedy that. Can't promise that it will work but possibly worth a try.

  • Does anyone here get regular phishing emails that look like they're from Hasbean? Example attached. Annoyingly they have my full name.

  • I started getting them in December, not had any for a month though.

  • Finally the Hoff delivers, I feel so seen. Coffee isn't just a caffeine delivery system, kidz, some of us actually enjoy the taste of the stuff.

  • Interesting - will take a look at this
Timer on my Svart is a little flaky but I know my dose is ground when the burr sound moves from grinding to a high pitched scream! I’ve been meaning to investigate for a while and will look at shimming
