Edit: I’ll rescind this now. Getting a bit of drift with them. Not sure if it’s due to saif portafilter meltdown or construction in general.
On the cheaper end, I’ve a pair of Joe Frex scales that’ve survived a few bottomless portafilter meltdowns. Not advertised as waterproof but I’ve found them resilient. Measure to a tenth of a gram and built in timer.
I’ve seen them somewhere recently for £50+ which is outrageous, mine cost about £20. I think unbranded versions are out there for even less.
Only downside is that the timer stops. When you unweight the scale which is annoying when you stir/swirl a v60

I've got the Brewista smart scale 2 which has been great. A bit spenny but it's used multiple times a day for a couple of years now.
However I don't use the auto functions so a reliable scale with a timer would do the same job just as well.

Always a v60 over an aeropress for filter for me. The aeropress is good but you get a much better range of flavours from a v60 imo. You could get a chemex/woodneck with a cloth filter to avoid paper but I think the cleaning is a bit of a faff.

You can re use a paper filter on an aeropress, I've had one last a few weeks at least with one cup a day through it

Timemore Black Mirror turned out better than expected.

Thanks all, looks like the timemore are the ones, they are the only ones I can find in stock.

I think I like the pour over better as it's a bit more chill. Can you get decent results without a stupid kettle?
-
• #19734
Ok, that's nice to know. I've had a look at some vids and I think a V60 is more suited to me in terms of quantity of coffee for effort involved. Currently using a 3 cup? moka pot for 2 cups.

The other thing that looked interesting is the Clever Dripper. It's kind of a V60 but it retains the water in the cone until you activate some kind of release. So you have less fussy pouring requirements and I'm guessing a bit stronger extraction but it's still filtered.

I just use a normal kettle, as long has you don't have the wrist strength of Mr Burns you should be more than able to pour slowly enough.
-
• #19737
Boil only the quantity of water you need in the kettle and it’s far easier to pour it as a trickle. It’s not critical though, it’s not like a V60 brew goes wrong if you accidentally slosh a load of water into it.

Yeah, normal boring kettle for me.

Trying to get a Wilda grinder proved almost impossible, ended up buying a Melitta Calibra.
Has built in scales, easy adjustable grind size and digital display for setting output weight/ duration of grind (?) and vague cup quantities. So far so good

Can anyone recommend a strong coffee server to put a V60 on top of and pour coffee from?
I've had a nice hario one (it smashed), I've had several Taiwanese copies of the nice hario ones (they all smashed) and I've also had a kinto one that smashed. Maybe I'm the problem here 🤔.
I do also have one of the hario thermos ones that has a lid and button to pour, but it's a little overkill on the cleaning for daily use.

How did they break out of interest, looking at picking up a Hario one at some point
-
• #19742
I don't think I dropped any of them, it was more putting them down with some force or catching them on something in the drying rack etc.

I think the answer to a sturdy server will probably come from a coffee shop owner, as they must use ones that can be chucked into a commercial dishwasher

what about the insulated (metal) Hario server?
edit - just read the last line - doh!
-
• #19745
Fair enough! Probably not a conventional answer, but my Chemex feels pretty damn sturdy. My 1.4l one is too wide to fit a V60 on top but maybe a smaller one would be an option. Probably not the most economical solution, but they do look nice.
That last sentance could probably be a tagline for this thread.

Lol, I’ve got this hario microwave one (not that I’d ever microwave it). It feels very delicate and your post has only made me feel worried about breaking it!

Odd that the size 2 is listed as being borosilicate while 1 and 3 are not.

What about a milk pitcher?

I got my new Wilfa Svart set up, really pleased with it, I used the same weights and same coarseness as with my old grinder but I swear it tastes noticeably cleaner.

this looks like it might be a bit sturdier?
Forum recommended espresso scales ? Would like them to be waterproof / resistant and have a timer
it'll be going on my Christmas list so Acaia are not an option.
