If I may.
Stove top.
Beans are best
Go to The Algerian Coffee Shop on Old Compton street.
Buy 500 gr of Bolivian High roast.
If you don't want beans they will grind it for you.
Enjoy your coffee.

My mates Cubika started making that noise recently, too. Will pass on the tip!
I can't afford an espresso machine just yet. I use a Stovetop and whilst it doesn't really make espresso, it does make super nice coffee when you learn how to use it right. The best bits of advice on stovetop use are: Cool towel around the base as soon as you hear any gurggling sound, and don't use super fine ground (in Italy they sell a different grade of illy especially for stovetops, something a bit more coarse, why they don't do the same here is beyond me).
Recently tried to spend less on coffee (have only ever had Illy & Monmouth, really) and am getting into my french press (which is kinder on cheaper coffee, I find).
The one cup a day rule went out of the window ages ago, I shudder to think how much coffee I drink now.

Thanks for the suggestions bombcup and andy.w. I did try the old airlock trick yesterday, but have given it a prolonged burst this morning with no joy. My eardrums nearly burst on me earlier! Should have mentioned yesterday, the noise gets worse when steaming the milk, I assume this is because of the higher pressure in the boiler from heating the water to the point of obtaining steam.
I will have a look at taking it apart today, as after a bit of Googling I found a thread (on Mumsnet !!) where someone had a similar problem and found that one of the pipes from the reservoir was loose and letting in air.
Thanks again

It's a funny old world. My partner has hinted that she would like to go on a coffee tasting course (experience?) as a Christmas present. So I get onto Google to find such a thing and this thread comes up as hit number 12!
LFGSS is amazing.
Anyway, I wonder if any of you lot can help out. I'm thinking of something akin to a wine tasting evening, but for coffee. Does anyone know of such a thing?

Okay so I CBA to look back through but since I started the thread, I'm not going to feel bad about it.
Want a reasonably priced grinder for Xmas - what's best (sub £50, so no Ibertial recommendations pls).

Square Mile Coffee do tasting evenings, not sure when though. Go to their website and sign up for the newsletter. I'm planning on going to the next one if I can!

What type of coffee are you grinding beans for?
-
• #1498
Don't understand the question. I'll be grinding various types of coffee beans to make various types of coffee - to be used in cafetiere, stove tops and a Mukka express (requires an espresso style grind).
While I'm at it, does anyone have a spare plastic top to a Mukka express? I dropped mine and it sheared off.

I use this.. It's small, simple and does enough for my 8 cup stove top

Jim - don't get the Krups one - its a blade system which will fook up the beans
you want a burr grinder, this is probably the best for your budget
My Cubika does the same, and as bombcup says just give it a blast on the steam valve.
