You can get Gaggia Classics for <£100.
But you need your own grinder. Biggest difference I noticed was not the machine but going from pre-ground to home ground. Massive difference.

what grinder do you use?

A big red one

would something like this be any good at all (given that i'm only getting through 2/3 cups a day)?
-

Yeah, they're supposedly really good. A vintage Zassenhaus / Trosser / Peugeot / PeDe off fleabay would be cheaper if you're willing to take a punt.

Aren't you Super Jolly bombcup? I'm Super Jolly! Ho Ho Ho He He He Ha Ha Ha
I'm Major. Bigger 85mm burrs, bit faster. Works a treat with my Peppina and is now earning its money on Neil's stall on Lewisham market paired up with a reconditioned Marzocco.
Nowt wrong with them, it's just that SJ looks kind of incongruous next to the most technologically advanced espresso machine in the world. Like putting solid tyres on your track bike.

I've not seen that model, but I believe zassenhaus hand grinders have an ok rep. I got one, and it works for me.

i went into dose today and he is selling these stainless hand grinders with ceramic burrs. looked quite neat and easy to use they cost £50.
still think i'll end up with an ibertal though -

Hmmm thats some nice retro shizzle. You going to polish it up or leave the patina?
-
• #1440
i'll clean the aluminium top and dismantle the grinder to give it a thorough clean but apart from that nothing else.

Someone was talking about those hand grinders on the espresso ride. I was contemplating one for the office but unless it's heading to the pub, I barely leave my desk so perhaps 240V is the way to stay..

Who was the be-fluoro'd Colnago rider there at about 8:45 this morning? Nice frame.

Yeah they are good if on a budget. If you have get decent grinder (Iberital MC2 etc or an older style manual one) pair it with the Aeropress and you can some lovely clean coffee. Its not espresso though, I use it for making big cups of basically filter coffee. Good in the morning as you only have to boil a kettle, not wait for a machine to warm up!

Can anyone help me find the definitive coffee book. I'm looking for a present. something with a bit of machine porn, informative descriptions of beans and the harvestings/roasting process?
I looked at aeropress, might have to revisit it.. i'm not after any milk steaming but I was hoping for an actual machine.
i'll have a look at iberital, cheers.
