There's a way to drive out the group head using just a bolt (I think) but I can't remember the method. Something like you screw in a bolt that's too long which forces the group head to lift away, except that wouldn't work, so don't do that!

Ha
Hot water not working either.
I have a nice shiny brass one to replace it with too.You may be on to something though.

Enjoy.
Playground Coffee House is near FCP and worth a visit too.
-
• #12287
Fcp was our first stop today..
My flat white was delightful, also tried one of the filter coffees but the girlfriend didn't enjoy it that much.
Safe to say I polished it off!
5/7 would go again!

Ace, bonus coffee too. Shame your gf didn't enjoy it tho, did she say what was up with it?
Csb: took my Mum to Collonas in Bath, she asked for sugar, ignored advice it'd taste crappy, and was definitely not a fan overall. Traditional Tearooms next time for sure. /csb.

Hey buddy, glad you enjoyed it. The filters are pretty light, so not for everyone. Don't be shy about coming and letting us know if you visit again, I'd happily make you something else.

The coffee was ace, right up my street!
The gf just isn't used to black coffee she said, but enjoyed it as much as she could! She also liked the vibe in there too for what it's worth!

Coffe hive mind. I'm in Brighton for the day, where should I check out? (last Brighton post in this thread looks like 2 years ago, anything new?)
-
• #12293
since Taylor St left, its all about Small Batch.
Ground is supposed to be good, but never been.
-
• #12294
Ground is my local and it's decent trading mainly on being cosy and friendly. Recently refurbished and open late at weekends for booze @mrs_socks - however it is in Kemptown so if you're in Brighton that probably means it's out of range.
Small Batch have skyrocketed from a small roasters and a cart to a chain of about 8 shops in Brighton and Worthing. It's well done, their filters are decent but I find their espresso based drinks a bit specific.
There's the main one on Jubilee Street by the library. Probably be busy and closes around 4ish. Nearby there's also Bond Street Coffee which was started by Horsham Roasters and a guy who used to work at Coffee@33 (Trafalgar Street - my previous local).
The Marwood is also central and reckoned to be OK but I don't particularly like it - like a weird pub.
Small Batch or Bond Street probably your best bets for the day.
-
• #12295
the marwood is definitely weird but the coffee is drinkable.
cafe coho I'm not a fan of as they union beans and I think they roast too dark.
I was a big fan of the ground shop up on the edge of hove but haven't tried any of their others.
if I'm at my mum's on the other side of the main pavillion to the lanes I go to Red Roaster as it's closest but it's pretty hit and miss in there tbh and their ordering system is supremely irritating (you order and collect from the same 3 foot wide gap in the counter and there's no system for whose order is whose and as they keep serving you get pushed further away from where you get your coffee from).
-
• #12296
Yeah, they (Ground) closed the hove one didn't they. They have a branch in Lewes - I was there the other week and going to go in but when I eventually found it it was tiny and they only had 20 mins left til closing so I was too awkward to go in. /tooawkwardtobuyacoffeeface.
Grounds owner recently started doing their own roasting under 'Pharmacie' and I think they have maybe a cafe or something in Hove near where their old Ground branch used to be. Pharmacie roasts are actually very decent. Some really delicious filters and not too pricey.

I've acquired a Moka pot for Xmas - any tips on the best coffee to use/handy hints/things to avoid? Thanks
-
• #12298
I only do Italian roasts in mine.
You'll have to experiment with both amounts of water and grounds, my 2 pots have quite different requirements. Always fine grind, though not as fine as what Lav or illy sell (they're crap anyway, and #alwaysgrindyourown). -
• #12299
The finer you grind, the more resistance you create, the higher pressure you need to extract the coffee, the higher the water temperature you need to create the pressure.
Try to go as coarse as you can get away with whilst still creating some viscosity in the brew. This will avoid bitterness.

If you have a grinder, I always suggest giving the Sainsburys Tanzanian Mochi peaberry a go. If you don't like it you haven't really lost anything and you have had some practise at different grind levels.
If you don't have a grinder, well, you will do.
