  • ^ mc2 not easily variable tho, by time you've backed adjuster off enough to change from espresso to filter grind might as well have used hand grinder set coarse leave mc2 as espresso.

  • The £35 Dualit and Melitta burr grinders are absolutely fine for brewed coffee, they're realistically priced and they're a huge improvement over pre-ground coffee. It will even make a passable espresso with a fairly dark roast (light roasts need finer grinding which might be just beyond the limit of these machines). I've done some blind tests between these and our industrial Mahlkonig grinders, and although there is a noticable loss of complexity and clarity when tasted side-by-side the domestic grinders still do a good job. A better comparison would be between coffee ground on a Dualit and coffee preground and sealed in a bag for a month - then you would appreciate what a good investment the Dualit is.

They're noisy and plasticky and brittle, the burrs are tiny so they get hot which is what robs some detail from the brew. If you want something built a bit better then you need a Mignon but that's a big leap in price. Having one of these grinders will do great things for your coffee brewing.

  • Those things can also be bodged to grind finer if you need them to.

  • I've used the DeLonghi with the limit screw removed to grind finer than stock as per: http://ping-pong-balls.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/so-youve-bought-delonghi-kg89-how-to.html

as mentioned above the tradeoff is hotter burrs

  • Naked Portafilter for Gaggia Classic - never used. £30 posted. PM's please.

  • ^ 26.40 on happydonkey though?

  • Fair enough. I'll match that price. Though I won't charge you £5.10 for shipping.

  • Anyone saw this cold brew kit on crowd funding?

    Any thoughts?

  • Not sure why you'd bother with a $99 thing when a mizudashi from Hario is barely over a tenner. Works fine as well...

  • Haha I get the exact same at my office. Mindless fools!!

  • Coffee aficionados.
I'm goin to Spain for two weeks next week and was gon bring some coffee with me.

My question is, will EasyJet be a pain in the arse about me takin it in my hand luggage?

  • I've carried coffee and various brewing equipment etc on a fair few budget airlines and never had any trouble.

  • Yeah, should be fine

  • SE18, near Plunstead Common - just moved here. Where can I get my coffee fix? The London Coffee guide dosen't stretch this far :/

  • It's going to be a tough day without a decent coffee.

  • Am currently holidaying in puglia, got another day and a half in lecce before hitting the coasts.
Anyone know where I can get some decent roasted beans in this area, didn't think about it beforehand, but gf mentioned it and now it feels like a good idea..
    Let me know.

  • Lol Italian coffee. Just buy Illy and forget it.

  • I don't know if this is blasphemy round here but we had a bean to cup machine delivered at the weekend.

Very impressed with the coffee. Coffee tasted a little burnt on factory settings but that was soon fixed by lowering the brewing temp a bit.

  • whatever gets your from A to B

  • So, my dad drinks loads of crap cafetière coffee - he's totally un fussy and generally brews the shit out of it. When he comes round here, I get cleaned out of my nice(er) stuff as he uses so much coffee to make a pot.

My question is: can anyone recommend a half decent but cheap bean I can just buy a load of and have as a dad-supply for when he's round? Ideally I'd like to be able to put up with it too, so can't be too crap, although I'd aeropress it as I can't stand cafetières.

  • Bella Barista's Gaslight?

  • Not sure if this is too late, but I really like the wilfa coffee grinder.

  • Will investigate, thanks. Someone told me Ocado do a well cheap and -servicable- medium roast that's ok. I'm dubious - i've struggled to find supermarket beans that weren't undrinkable bitter.

  • I disagree.
I like Italian style roasts and cannot abide Illy.
