  • yeah. but now the issue is what you are going to do about coffee? bring a grinder to the office? Grind at home in the morning and bring it in?

This is substantially more complex than I thought.

  • If you are, then so am I. At first I thought it was the grind, so went coarser, but the shot pulled to fast and the puck was soggy. Went back to the old grind and tamped less, and got a twenty second shot that blonded quickly. I'm at something of a middle ground now with all of the variables, but am getting more of a 'drip, drip, drip' that occasionally forms a stream, as opposed to a proper stream.

Although in my case the inconsistency probably points to crap barista skills...

Have you checked the temp. of the water? sounds like it cold be too cold?

I'd done this in my head already and have 3 options that will all get used..

    1. Grind at home and bring in - no biggie.
    2. I've asked a colleague and they have brought their grinder in to the office
    3. The coffee booth near us sells beans and grinds
  • (to mooks) and did you mention what sort of machine you are using?

  • That's genius (or I'm daft). Thanks

I'm not bidding any more on that Rancillio.. it's going for more than I coulda got it off here so for that, I'm out. Sorry Ross :)

you mug you could have had for £150! i only put it on ebay as a last resort really. i regret it now because i've only just remembered what fucking numptys use ebay - so many questions

  • I know but it was a blessing in disguise since I don't NEED another bloody machine! :D
196 clams is better than 150 though so you can't really be too upset. :)

I think I've decided to bring the Gaggia into the office now so I will have a toy here and my kitchen won't look like a cafe.

Cheeky Bidder 8 just sitting there with a snipe.. sucked in... LOSER! :)

  • seriously 196 pounds for a machine not in perfect condition. a new one is £150 more!

  • You said yourself that the damage was only the case. Who cares. Dude still saved 150 clams.
I bid up to the 150 mark that you'd had anyway and then let it go. This Brasilia man.. dials get me hot hahaha

  • Oh, my naked portafilter arrived today along with some espresso cups, some backflushing stuff and a pressure dooviewacky..

If you hear a small explosion from a westerly direction, it's either murtle's arse or the Kitchen of Caffeinated Doom(tm)

  • i felt a teflon covered PF today, was dreeeeeeamy

  • I can't wait to squirt hot liquid all over myself with this naked portafilter.*

*Coffee thread takes turn for the worst

  • Hippy if it makes you feel any better the guy that won the machine is a kiwi

    arf arf

  • hehehe it does. :)

  • You had a go on a stainless PF Ross? Hmmm....machined from solid.... Some fuckers get all hysterical about teflon but I reckon it'd be more efffective than stainless. Never used either.

  • The basket in this naked portafilter is a good bit deeper than my current one.
This is going to throw my measurements off since I was just filling the basket up.
I thought there were only single and double baskets - is this a triple or is there just a bigger double version?

    Confused of Ealing

  • yeah dude you get triples, i can't say i'm the worlds bigggggest fan of triples, you should be able to just replace it with a double basket though if you want?

stephen yr post lost me? i just meant that i'd played about on the nouvo simineli today, quickly, liked the PFs!

  • i'm developing a healthy addiction to the guest coffees at Dose. double espresso mid-afternoon is a big improvement on the office swill.

one of the fellas that works there ride a brakless swobo, too.

  • Yeah there is a triple basket and it's no bad thing. F&W use them to good effect, as did Flat White last I saw.

NPFs often arrive with triples. A nudie is sometimes neccessary for triple basket use as they may be too deep for a standard PF. Swap thr triple basket out for your standard double if you're still aiming for consistency. If you're making good shots at will then start playing with the triple. You should find you get really heavy syrupy sweet ristretto type shots from monster 25g+ doses

  • Ross, sorry fella, I was on about stainless as an alternative to Teflon to achieve the same end; easy cleaning ergo cleaner tasting shots. Thought you meant aftermarket teflon pf for Marzocco or similar.

  • Tanzania Blackburn Estate from SQM was rockin at Dose on Tuesday. Real heavy but nice clean acid finish. Joke about coffee from an estate in Blackburn was lost on upside-downer

yeah i think i had that one. i agree very clean acid taste, but i found the mouthfeel to be a bit wetter than some of the others, if that makes sense. not as smooth and felt "thinner" and less oily. not entirely to my taste, but i'm keen to try as many different coffees as possible.

i'm antipodean as well, so i don't really get the joke either, sorry.

i think his name is Will, he is really nice. if i was a girl i would be swooning all over him

  • Blackburn, yesterday. Not the home of fine coffee.

  • Got the naked portafilter..

Pulled a few shots with it. First one is using the larger basket and not enough coffee.. blonding quickly.. next one I moved to my normal Bezzera basket and normal full basket of coffee and it worked better but you can see the distribution/tamping is a bit off since it's ouring quite unevenly..

The pressure gauge didn't even move before it started spewing water over the top of the basket. Either the gauge is stuffed or the seal between head gasket and basket is not good enough for it to work :(
