my mind is just boggled that they thought this was a good idea other than to sell a shit load more batteries.

I use dirt cheap bottled spring water from sainos now. 27p for 2 litres or something.
Keeps the scale down.

I was under the impression that there's some witty guy at Makita who thought "hey, let's make this work with batteries as well, just for the heck of it", key words being as well as primarily people will just use the thing plugged in an outlet surely?

S&M burr grinder, £50 if you come and get it from Forest Hill, I will accept (quite cheerfully) coffee as part of that £50, as I've run out of beans.

^ looks like a good deal. Knock the hopper off and it won't be too big.
Anyway, Leytonstone has finally got its first decent coffee place: Wild Goose Bakery on Leytonstone High Road, just a few doors up from the Red Lion. Beans are Climpson's (possibly my general favourite) and they have a La Marzocco of some description.

21x31x55cm is the space it takes up, with the hopper, as you point out removing the hopper makes it significantly shorter.

This is a really, really good deal (maybe too good), plus remember that Steve / Bombcup is ex-Monmouth Coffee.
You should mention who you are and what's available at coffeeforums.co.uk , as a lot of those people buy by mail order.

Did that, I now understand your feelings about that forum...

Anyone have experience buying beans from Whittard? There's one right beside where I work so it's incredibly handy!

If I had space I'd take it, hand grinding 150g of beans for cold brew is pretty irritating after a while!

Awesome - ordered some of the Espresso Blend

Working up in Canary Wharf these days!
Physics innit.
Energy in high capacity battery = 18V * 5Ah = 324000 J
Water has a specific heat capacity of 4.18J per gram per deg C so to raise 500 ml of water up 85 deg C (from 15 deg C to boiling) requires:-
4.18 * 500 * 85 = 177650 J
I'd expect ~80% efficiency for a standard kettle so I'm guessing they're erring on the side of caution and the battery will be 80% spent after boiling the suggested amount.
