How do I do that?

If you are getting the 'Fail Safe Terminal' up then it's not a total disaster. Is networking working? Try pinging 'yahoo.co.uk'?
Tiswas is quite right look at the syslog to see if there are any obvious errors. But I have a feeling there is just a corrupt file somewhere stopping Unity or some other desktop component from starting properly.
sudo tail -100 /var/log/syslog
We get to here and then hang:
Does it hang as soon as your wireless is connected?
-
• #332
Come on Fedora, stop pushing your releases back like you always do, I want to install 15...

Does it hang as soon as your wireless is connected?
Yep
-
• #334
Have you got a way to physically switch off the Wireless? If so switch if off and try logging in normally, this will prove that your problem lies with the NetworkManager and the wireless drivers.

If you are interested :
1.Restart your laptop, don’t connect to wireless
2.Connect your laptop to your router using Ethernet cable*
3.Open Terminal and run : 'sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade'
4.System → Administration → Hardware drivers and see if you can enable restricted drivers for your wireless (and/or any other devices)
5.This will probably require restart, so go ahead and reboot and try connecting to Wi-Fi again.*If you cant get Ethernet cable, try playing with your Wi-Fi settings. Reducing strengths of your key, changing from WPA to WEP, disabling password. Make sure you change this back when you are done. Or post your laptop model and I can try to find you a Wi-Fi card driver and post it here.
Oh, and as soon as you have all this sorted, REMOVE UNITY and install Gnome-shell :

Is there any way to undo an update? Did one earlier and now Flash stuff has decided to stop working. So no Youtube or most video players, no shitty procrastination games either.
I have the restricted extras installed which is meant to give me Java, Flash etc so something is wrong.

Mine is working fine now, running Gnome- looked like the update and upgrade that Tiswas recommended did the trick.
That said I have yet to reboot- so it may not come back up.

Has anybody tried out Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot? Recently made the jump to Debian 7 Wheezy but interested to see how people are finding Ubuntu's latest offering.

Got it on my notebook atm, bit indifferent, although barely had any time to play with it.
That and I don't really like Unity though.
-
• #342
I've got it running on my other partition.. Seems fine, definite improvement on Natty Narwhal's unity desktop.
"The truth is Ubuntu 11.10 is a huge improvement over 11.04. Unity is much improved and the often downright terrible performance issues in 11.04 have dramatically improved. If you're OK with Unity then by all means upgrade. If, on the other hand, you're more cautious and want to give Unity more time before you abandon good-old GNOME 2 and Ubuntu 10.10, well, there's no reason to rush."
The above about sums it up from that article.

Unity sucks balls, no? Is Ubuntu 11.10 an LTS version?
I don't believe it is an LTS release. The last one is still 10.04. I'm running 11.04 still mainly because I haven't had a chance to upgrade but I will. I'm going to do a clean install as opposed to an upgrade, I have a few things that aren't quite right with 11.04 which I hope a clean install will resolve. I'm running xubuntu-desktop though, Unity and Gnome Shell both suck.

Argh, I really don't want to go through the faff of getting Gnome on here instead of Unity again. Especially as my brother is miles away and it's easier to let him get on with it.

YES!
Is Ubuntu 11.10 an LTS version?
LTE is released every two years. The next one should be 12.04

meh, 11.10 seems to have broken my laptop, i am now caught in an endless reboot cycle. i blame the old hardware (dell inspiron 710m from 2006). tbh the onboard intel graphics from that chip were never properly supported by ubuntu. ah well, back to 10.04 for me

Hello - I've got the usual ubuntu 10 no sound problem and was wondering if there's anyone out there that can fix it for a fee. I've tried the usual forums and tried a few suggestions, it seems it may be a driver missing but I don't have the knowledge to sort it. Alternatively, it may be an option to install version 11 if you can get it to boot beyond the few lines of code that come up after putting in the installation disc. Live Highbury but could meet central London.

i've just put 11.10 onto an Acer Aspire One and had to convince it to get the wifi to work. Mainly through trying forum suggestions (black list the drivers, comment out the blacklist then uncomment the comment out - sounds backwards but it worked)
try searching with more specifics about your hardware, that's what helped me.
Why isn't the installation working? I have the 11.10 installation still on a usb stick in my wallet which you are welcome to use if you can change the boot order to pick up usb?

I also have them on USB or disc and also live in highbury. More hardware information would helP.
