  • 4GB RAM? XP should run on 1GB or less.
I though that it couldn't support that much RAM anyway.
And what sort of mobo runs a 166MMX and can carry that much memory?
Why am I having such a geeky conversation?
Is anyone even listening to me?
    Hello?

Good point. Maybe it was 4 meg? :)
    It was over 10 years ago ffs. 4 slots, maybe 4 x256 or 4 x 512?
Anyway, that proves my point even more.

  • Try turning it off and on again, Oliver.

    [metallic voice]Does ... not ... compute ...[/metallic voice]

  • It can't, it can only support 3.5GB of RAM.
2GB is pretty much optimal... in any case, you shouldn't give a virtual machine more than Total System RAM / Number of CPU Cores worth of RAM. Software virtualisation cannot take advantage of more than that, and even with a Hyper-V you won't really be able to take advantage of the additional RAM fully.

It can only address 3.5gb of RAM. You can install 4gb though.

  • Memory fail- my Vaio runs Media Centre, for which I have a legal product activation code/key.

? I don't even know what you are talking about now.

  • XP home/pro/media centre were the options, I have media centre

  • Stop talking about Windows - Hippy will merge this thread with some other random shit if you're not careful!

  • Merging is never random, fool. I ain't gettin' on no merge plane in this thread.

  • Of course you need drivers. It's not magic fairy land. Which version of windows was it?

I still don't see the point of running linux at home unless you are prone to excessive geekery (I've done it - waste of time). Most funky hardware (Powertap, Garmins) will have drivers written for Windows, Mac if you're lucky and Linux once in a blue moon.

I did exactly the same thing about 5 years ago ... fucked about with various Linux Distros and then decided I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of repos, install the JDK via building an RPM/DEB package from source etc. etc, configuring X (I know you don't have to anymore). Then having to use crap Open source versions of the same programs I can get for nothing on Windows via MSDNAA. (I don't mind using VIM, XMMS, MPlayer etc because they work well, but Open Office and Eclipse do my head in).

Run OpenBSD at home when not using Windows 7, OpenBSD is a piece of piss to update and keep running compared to Linux (but I only use it really to learn C) ... but as a .NET developer I tend to be mostly booting Windows.

  • Just use Ubuntu.

I can't say this enough. I'm having to use CentOS at work and the thing is an absolute fucktard. Nothing is in the default repositories and I cannot recall ever compiling so much software from source except for when I ran Gentoo for a while. Urgh. Oh, and SELinux is just hassle... does it really offer anything substantial that makes this pain worth it?

    Ubuntu. Piece. Of. Piss.

  • linpus anyone?

  • Anyway- back to a question from a little while ago, can one load XP specific drivers using Wine?

My brother just sent me this- thoughts?

  • Tried playonlinux?

  • OK, here's a question.
I'm running an HP thin client (t5325). RDP connection to windows pc works fine, web browsing (ice weasel) works fine,.. except... I can't install flash player.
Any ideas anyone? I've tried the HP forums and they're either useless or unavailable.

  • Where in the process does it fail?

Thin clients store their OS on an EPROM or something (memory chip that saves its data rather than a magnetic drive).

You probably need to login as an admin (hold down shift when you logoff and then login as Admin), install Flash and then execute some command to 'write' the changes to the EPROM.

    "ewfmgr.exe c: -Commit"

  • The link above relates to embeded xp. I've got several options on the Adobe site for downlad.
Should I go for Ubuntu, Red Hat or some more general flavour?

PS. I've forgotten just about everything I knew about linux, but It's working well enough to allow me to post this.

  • Sorry, read the 'windows pc' bit and didn't even realise it was the linux thread.

  • Just go for the general flash player plugin. The .bin file will try and install a libflash.so file in every browsers plugin file, e.g ~.mozzilla/plugins. If you have any problems just find where the libflash.so is installed and create a soft link to the plugin files of any browser live. Make sure the file has the correct permissions e.t.c.

  • Just use Ubuntu.

    I can't say this enough.

    Ubuntu. Piece. Of. Piss.

I am using Ubuntu. Now we'll see how idiot proof it really is.

  • :-)
Should be peasy. If not, there's this thread and you have my number.

  • when i upgraded to the most recent version of ubuntu my internet didn't work and i needed to download somehing to fix it. dual boot ftw.

  • Always keep a live CD handy that you know works. Keep it in the draw.

  • tried ubuntu by installing it on an external HDD so when i wanted i would plug it in, boot it and away. getting it to work was fine until i needed to do things like plug in other external hard drive which for whatever reason would not be recognised.

Went on the Ubuntu forum and to be fair a lot of people helped me, but it still didn't work.
I then decided after many many hours trying to get it to work to delete it. However the 'grub' thingy ubuntu installed on the HDD would not go away, even after formatting or low level formatting. I was like wtf ?! i hate this, so many problems for such simple things that just work on windows 7. i had to use KillDisk in the end to delete Grub, the most persistent, annoying thing i have ever come across.

So yea that's my linux story. I for one don't see it's allure. nothing works without using some kind of code.

  • Have you tried running windows 7 off of an external HD to see in the same manor to see if everything works?

Grub is installed is a special section of the HD. There was no need to remove it you could have just alter windows to default o/s and set the time-out to zero second. You could have also used the windows boot loader instead of installing grub on your MBL and had that pointing to your external hd with grub on there.

  • it's all way above my head, which is why i like windows 7 because everything just works.
