Typical campy shite..Hah, makes me happy i just ordered some nice new bling bling Shimano Dura Ace cranks + chainring :)
Cost me about as much as i spend on beer in a month, but who cares ;) -

Momentum Hopefully you didn't pay too much for them cos the Strada cranks are reasonably easy to get hold of. You might be ok now that you've filed it down, but I'd keep a close eye on them so that you can see any other cracks develop. Have a good look over the rest of both cranks while you're at it, especially around the pedal threads, the part where the crank gets bigger to accomodate the pedal and both ends of the fluting. Having seen someone crack one of these I'd ensure that you do this regularly.
They are most likely to snap when under greatest load, ie out of the saddle sprints, which are likely to the times when you least want a breakage.
Like when Kuba snapped his in the sprints from a trackstand start at longest kid last year!
I had/have some old ofmega track cranks with that same sharp edge. Cracked them and messengered on them for about 6 more months after filing it a bit. They still haven't snapped, just sitting in my parts box now...

You must be psychic - I was on the start line so saw it close up. He was fine but can you imagine that happening as a truck comes barreling down and you're sprinting to get out of the way...

i had a crank arm snap on my fuji in dc, flying down penn ave towards the white house, snapped it and whipped out right infornt of the bomb barriers.
-
• #33
You whipped it out in front of the bomb barriers?!
Did they bust you for having a weapon out?? -

Sounds like a Critical Mass protest idea!

another one...
bought this off ebay, proper pista crank came cracked on both sides at the spider joint. what a bummer. seller's terms are no returns but obviously he either didn't see them or didn't mention them.miro_o, hope you'll see this... wondering how your one came out after filing? how long did it last you and are you still riding the same cranks?
-
• #39
Mine are cracked too. Got to say, I think these cranks are shite. When I bought them I thought they were great but have since changed my mind. Luckily mine are under warranty and I will be sending them back soon. :(

He probably sold them on eBay to you.

Were yours an old version? I've got brand new Campag Record track cranks...

I've seen so many of these cranks cracking (many Strada).
Used then with a small crack or rounded the edge a bit with a small round file.
Never saw a case that the crack went any deeper or that the crank broke.I 've had several other cranks broken though, all from different types.
When such a Campag crank fails, it's at the logo or another engraved marking (e.g. type, crank length indication, etc).

@edmundane - They are 30 years old and worn out!
@mikec - you put them on to tight, the went up too many hills :-)
-
• #44
well yeah, still didn't expect the guy to sell a lemon like this. he does sell a lot of parts so i assume he should be aware of the weakness on the same style cranks. i think i'll talk to him about it and see if he'll let me return it or least give me a part refund before i actually file them down... what a bummer.

People seem to forget this fact. The only reason you don't see any 30 year old cracked Shimano cranks is because they were already assigned to the bin 15 years ago.
Still bad luck though edmundane, hope you can sort out something with the seller.

Ross at BC suggested I should file my Pistas straight away to stop this happening... I haven't of course... I've seen quite a few cracked ones in the last coupla years... Will filing them actually stop any cracks appearing?
-
• #47
Yes they were the new ones. Had them less than a year before they cracked :(
I did go up hills in them, that is true. But still, they should be able to withstand that. -
• #48
Oh well. I don't mind the odd bit of crack.
-
• #49
Campag are fail. Conti are fail. One day you will see..
-

The only thing that is FAIL, is the ISIS bottom bracket system.
Bad luck, miro_o.
Just plug the crack with some blu-tac, that's what Shitmano would do.
I'll get me coat.
