^well, if that's true ..use a spinny gear.. and brake with your rim brake.^
-

by the way, how do you know they are record?
i only ask cos i used to have come 170mm strada cranks ..were they record?
-
• #6
That shape.
From what I've gathered... Record became Nuovo-Record – I'm not sure if that name signified any actual change to the product. The Super Record was the top of the range, with lighter (titanium?) bolts etc. They all use the same crank arms.
The Pista is identical to the Strada minus the support for the second ring. 165 and 170mm are the only sizes I've found.Did you ever have issues/failures with your set? How long/hard did you use them for?

heh i have a drive-side strada crank too. In need of the other side, a bb and a chainring (can you get 45t chainrings?)
-
• #8
Yea, common with all cranks that have that same sharp edge in that spot. Only way to help it would be to lightly file it away and a good, smooth polish. That would only help if it's not that deep.

I used them for a month, then sold them on ebay. No problems.
here is them :

What bike is it on? If you're running brakes you might risk it until it snaps.. depends on your injury/budget factor I guess.

That's what I heard too.
I've just gone at it with a round file... and it's fine now.
Although the crack was quite long, it was only about 1.5mm from the surface so filed out no worries. I was amazed how soft that metal was! The whole process took about 2mins! -

That's not a lot like mine!
The arm itself is similar but I've not seen one with 3 arms before
All the Campy cranks have Strada (road) stamped on-em (unless Pista natch) -

Thanks for the Shimano propaganda hippy!
;)
That crank's been on a Colnago, going on a new IRO Angus.
I don't weigh enough (60kg) to have ever snapped a crank before, and my wheels always last well. Plus I'm young/dumb enough to risk using it I think. It filed out much better than I thought. -

Thanks for the info everyone.
I'll ask a next-of-kin to post something on this forum if/when it catastrophically fails yeh?

Just stop pedaling when you notice any odd feelings around the crank area.. :)

It's Campag here by the way. Campy is septic-speak. ;-)

Hopefully you didn't pay too much for them cos the Strada cranks are reasonably easy to get hold of. You might be ok now that you've filed it down, but I'd keep a close eye on them so that you can see any other cracks develop. Have a good look over the rest of both cranks while you're at it, especially around the pedal threads, the part where the crank gets bigger to accomodate the pedal and both ends of the fluting. Having seen someone crack one of these I'd ensure that you do this regularly.
They are most likely to snap when under greatest load, ie out of the saddle sprints, which are likely to the times when you least want a breakage.
I found this last night on my newly acquired cranks.

I've heard it's common on this model. Do people think going at it with a round file will do any good or is it (expensive) scrap?
All thoughts and advice greatly appreciated.
