  • So,

I'm getting fixed up, was getting this bloke to build me up, but he's über busy and i'm getting desperate and annoyed. So thought this weekend i'd try and get my hands on a set of wheels:

who builds them? who can do it cheep? who can also provide the parts?

was thinking mavic open pros: what I want it a nice light silver rim. no deep v's here thanks...

and a silver hub too. i'm going classic.

So i need someone to provide the parts and to build them for me... So what do you say? who's good? who's available to do it within a week or so??

then to get me proper on my way i need some tips on what what gear ration to go for and what type of chainset i can afford...

    any pointer would be amazing!

  • if you supply parts lots of people on here build them

  • I know! but where do i supply the parts from?

  • you should be able to get open pros from your lbs or check on the interweb for deals, try hubjub for hubs, you can get formual ones form your lbs most likly but if you want anything more bling try the interweb

  • shops, internet
arup will source parts and build them up for you

  • not hard dude. how about not being a lazy fuck and order yourself.

go to SJS click buy rim and click buy hub and click buy spokes, click rim tape, click tubes, click tyres.

    or

also, what's the go with all these peeps who want stuff done for them uber cheap and right now.

  • i hate to type in caps but...
1st rule of thumb on using ANY internet forum.

    USE SEARCH.

loads of wheel build threads on here. this way you can find a lot more information regarding to what you need. hope that helps.

  • wow! guys, sorry, yep. i was being lazy, did use search briefly, but was just leaving work so thought i'd see who'd bite the bait while i was away and though id get some new fresh tips if i started a new one... I love the fact that you reply even though you thoroughly disapprove...

Main thing about me not getting the parts myself is I was hoping to talk to someone with the knowledge about it first, thus the post. But got me some tips now so feeling like my bike questing saturday will be a success... Thanks! ;-)

  • yeah feel free to ask questions but when i said use search i mean ask questions in that thread, bring it back to life and let's keep it in one place, sorry if i sound mean.

  • no no. I need to be learned.

    thanks!

its not people wanting stuff for cheep that annoying its people that act all offended when offered a service at a fair price.

  • I'm upping my wheelbuild prices.

£100 per wheel instead of beer donations.

    free market economy!

yep, I've been really surprised to see that people only charge 10 quid to actually build the thing: that's seriously underselling your skills.

  • why? £10 and hour is ok.

I'd build you a wheelset for £20, if you buy all your own parts

  • 10-20 is perty reasonable, but then you get people who are offend if you want more then 5..

  • depends if they want a properly built, tensioned and de-stressed wheelset by someone using the correct tools, or some muppet in the pub throwing them up in a frame with zip ties or whatever..

  • RPM depends if they want a properly built, tensioned and de-stressed wheelset by someone using the correct tools, or some muppet in the pub throwing them up in a frame with zip ties or whatever..

    nothing wrong with this :p

  • I'll build some wheels for a fiver:
First I shall verify tension by plucking the spokes consecutively and checking they play the melody to "You turn me right round baby right round. Like a record baby round-round right round."
I chekc for trueness by holding the wheel axle in my hands and spinning it, eye-balling roundness/side-to-side against a freshly ironed checked shirt I keep hanging in my wardrobe for this purpose.
As a perfectionist - I de-stress all wheels by both: a) throwing my duvet over them and elbow-dropping them. b) a nice hot soapy bath with scented candles.
hmm.. I should probably start charging a tenner..

  • no way, £20 , just for the candles

  • Tenner per wheel was always my going rate - mainly cos I enjoyed doing it*. Cheaper than going to see a therapist.

*as long as the parts were half decent.

  • BringMeMyFix

*as long as the parts were half decent.

yep £10 for open pro on goldtec..

    £25 for D Victims on Formula :P

a nice hot soapy bath with scented candles.

Mmm. My next wheel set are going to get a massage as well.

I'd need to charge FOR the therapist after building wheels..

  • ok cool. done a bit more scouting out over the weekend and the guy i'm using: Adam from Perlie Rides(http://www.perlierides.com/) will be doing me both wheels for about 200 he reckons... I asked for hubs, rims(pref without brand names all over them) and spokes all in silver, and nice too, and that was his quote... does that sound reasonable to you? or do you reckon i should buy my own bits and pay one of you lot for a special massage and candle-lit bath affair?

  • well what rims and hubs are they??
