• Update: I cleaned up and tried an older BB in the shell. It is every so slightly out of alignment, but once tightened, not too noticeable. And more importantly, there is no resistance on the spindle. I'm not sure where to go from here. It could be the bottom bracket then I guess. Or just getting the thread looked at, as you say, may help. I really don't want to spend much more money on this!

  • Recently been having some issues after fitting a new BB & crankset (frame is a pretty old pre cursa, miche primato bb & crankset) If I'm putting in a lot of force ie hill start my pedals can suddenly jolt round, as though my BB turns forward taking the crankset with it. Not a great description but it's incredibly annoying & sometimes a bit worrying at busy junctions. I'm not sure if it's just a case of refitting with some loctite, a sign of a bigger problem or if i'm just being an idiot. I'm putting off taking it to a shop as i only just got it serviced at christmas (before the new transmission).

Alternatively if someone can recommend a nice south london bike shop i'd be grateful for that as well! (edit: just seen new brixton cycles will be open soonish)

  • I'd recommend going down to cycle PS camberwell. im sure @HarveyBrown can sort this out.

  • Thanks, may swing by tomorrow.

  • Are you sure your drivetrain isn't worn? Or is the chainring painted? That sounds more like a chain slipping to me.

I can't think of a crank/BB fault that would cause these symptoms.

  • I'm not actually, but the chainring is brand new so unless it's my cog? I'll some detective work tomorrow.

  • I had slip from a brand new chainring once: because it was painted, hence the question.

I can't see how a BB is going to "slip": there's no resistance there, so nothing to give way.

Measure your chain, check the sprocket for "shark's teeth" and make sure the chainring doesn't have any kind of coating or paint on it.

  • Hi,
I have a Campagnolo record Pista, and I'm planning to use it on my Pompino.
However, even with the 111mm bb, it doesnt work because left crank is way to close to the chainset. Does one of you knows if there's a bigger bb I can put on it? TY

  • Thanks for the advice, the guys at cycle PS gave it a tinker & it's feeling much better, a new sprocket probably wouldn't go amiss either!

  • You're welcome.

What did they do/say the problem was?

  • glad to hear that it's better :)

  • Novatec track hubs (Navigator pista wheelset) + Miche Primato Advanced ISO + Primato 107mm ISO BB requires BB Shifted to left about 1-1.5mm for a good chainline. Are there any British thread ISO square tapers that are 104mm that arent mega dollar?

  • I have a DA 7402 chainset which according to Velobase requires a 112 spindle on the BB.
Upon fitting the chainset the driveside looks OK and lines up well with the front mech, the non drive side crank arm does not seem to fit properly on the spindle and does not fit all the way onto the spindle.
Please help/let me know what I done wrong

  • Dent the chainstay for clearance. That's official on one policy.

  • Really? With a hammer?

  • with your fist

  • Damn. I've been falling in the trolling trap.

  • Posts by Brant (Richards), who designed the Pompino. He's talking about an inbred, but:

I just hit it with a hammer.

  • Oh yeah. Same process if its the left arm of the cranks which is too close to the frame?

  • Don't see why not*
