  • Right what is a good mid priced square taper BB I can use on my Langster?

Another question can you fit any type of BB so long as threading matches? E.g. to change cranks?

  • I had an alu GT track. It came with a 110.5mm Phil Wood bb + 7600 DA crank.

Swapped the frame for an identical Ti version but the^ bb axle was too short.

I had to resort to the DA njs bb that was originally in the Ti frame measuring 112.25mm.

It's now shot and I can't be arsed with the required maintenance for the Dura Ace system (open cup and balls- especially as it has no weather sleeve) in a UK winter.

I'd like to rebuild the Phil Wood bb with a longer axle but for ISO the options aren't great:

    Campy / ISO Taper
    92 [not a standard size]
    102
    105
    108
    110.5
    115

Would it be better going for the 115 ISO?

If not, what's the best way of converting an ISO bb axle to JIS bb to be used with an ISO crank?

What are opinions of Dura Ace Octalink?

  • ^ what cranks are you using?

  • ^ what cranks are you using?

if you meant me, I have some miche primatos i will be installing, but i like the look of Omniums but they require a different BB. Would this fit the Langsters frame?

  • If me, the same DA 7600 cranks

  • What are opinions of Dura Ace Octalink?

Nice but pricey. The track version of the BB (BB-7710) uses cartridge bearings, the road version (BB-7700) uses needle/ball bearings that are notoriously bad in wet weather. The axle length / dimensions are the same though, either works with the track cranks.

The 7710 BB is sold as "unsealed" too though, despite the cartridge bearings, so it might be something to avoid for an all-weather bike. Though I bet it would still last longer than an Omnium GXP BB.

  • If you just wanted a normal cartridge-bearing square taper BB, wouldn't the good old 111mm Campag BB (e.g. the Centaur one) do the job? 7600 take the same sized BB as Sugino 75s, right?

    Otherwise: https://www.lfgss.com/post3930223-716.html

See if there's an ISO option for ~2mm less than you currently use.

  • This seems like the right place. What grease should I pack the frame where the BB goes with?

Normal grease or copper slip? Or should I just copper slip the threads?

  • if you meant me, I have some miche primatos i will be installing, but i like the look of Omniums but they require a different BB. Would this fit the Langsters frame?

for the miches, this http://www.wiggle.co.uk/miche-primato-track-bottom-bracket/ or this http://www.totalcycling.com/a-z/bottom_brackets/bottom_brackets_track/BB_KINEX.html?gclid=CPqRmL_e5roCFU7KtAodgUgAAw works fine, your langseter shell will be BSA thread, 68mm wide, you just have to make sure your bottom bracket is like that too

If me, the same DA 7600 cranks

da 7600's are designed to work with a 109mm iso bb, the 111mm iso ones are as close as you can get, i have one here for sale http://www.lfgss.com/thread116579.html it'll put the chainline off by 1mm but that little doesn't really affect anything, have a look at the "database" and you'll see most people use 111mm iso axle bb's

as for using a jis bottom bracket on iso cranks, it is possible but there's no real point if there's better options about...

  • Thanks. I just bought a Shimano BB of that length. Will this not work?

    UN55 english thread...

  • it'll put your chainline out by 4-4.5mm, all shimano bb's are jis tapered at the end but miche/campagnolo/njs bb's are iso tapered at the ends meaning that the cranks sit further out by 4-4.5mm

What is fucking me is the level hub I'm using which has a messed up 45mm chain line hence the requirement for an adjustable chainline.

I've just won a 7710 crank and BB but I stupidly didn't stop to ask if the bb chain line is adjustable at all. Can it be adjusted or am I looking at spacers?

  • ^#scobld<<

  • Ah, right. No, the 7710 BBs aren't adjustable in terms of chainline. The splines stop a set length down the axle and that's where the crank bottoms out.

The left-hand cup uses an old-school lockring type of affair, where you tighten the cup until the axle stops turning freely, back it off a bit, and then hold it there with the special tool while you tighten the lockring. See the techdoc (PDF) for details.

  • Think I've got it:

109.5mm DA bb gives 42mm chain line (octalink)

    I need 45mm. That's an additional 3mm chainline (x2 for symmetry) + 109.5mm = 115.6mm bb in an ideal world.

The options in bb lengths are: 113mm and 118mm:

    option 1
    113 - 109.5 = 3.5mm /2 = 1.75mm addition to the 42mm chainline = 43.75mm

    -1.25mm too short.

    option 2

    118 - 109.5 = 8.5mm /2 = 4.25mm addition to the 42mm chainline = 46.25

    +1.25 too long.

I guess the latter option is better as I can use spacers for the level bolt-on sproket. Unless I've missed something?

    http://www.levelcomponents.com/images/Level%20concept.jpg

  • option 2 looks right and these should be good spacers http://www.ukbikestore.co.uk/product/54/cridsd/id-outer-chainring-spacers.html 1.2mm too

if you do go back to the fc-7600's then a 115mm iso bottom bracket would give a perfect chainline with a level hub

  • I have a Hatta R9400 bottom bracket on my vivalo, and it's developed lateral play three times. Each time i've taken it to micycle, and then play has developed again. I'm not sure how old the BB is as it came with the frame. You can feel the play at the places i put my feet when i skid, so that's what it's caused by i reckon, or the BB is old. Is this normal? Or should i buy a new BB? If so, which one? Thanks

  • Should I pack my BB with grease when fitting a new BB or just grease the threads with copper slip?

  • Looking for some advice. Putting together an old CB tandem. I scored a pair of LH Sakae tandem cranks. I'm trying to pair them with a Veloce triple RH crank for the rear. Looking at Shimano BB's but I'm not sure what length to try. I realise that the Campag Crank won't fit as far on the BB spindle so will probably be a bit trial & error, but what length do you reckon as a starting point ?

  • Hello guys

    I've a dumb newbie question.

I have a FSA Gimondi crankset with a 48T chainring.
It's a little bit too much for me, I'd like to put a 38 or 42 T chainring.

Does any 130mm 5 bolt fit or do I have to order a specific one (there is not info on FSA website)

    Thanks in advance

  • these are your best option price wise and quality wise
    http://velosolo.co.uk/shopcrank.html

the "VeloSolo CNC Road and Track Chainring SILVER anodized" will probably look quite good with the gimondi's but 48t to 38t is a bit of a massive jump if you're not changing your cog, maybe 46 or 44 would be a bit more of a progression?

  • I'm trying to remove a shimano style BB but the teeth of the tool don't seem to slot far enough in to engage properly so I can't get it out. Any tips?
