• dogsballs
hassanr
pj i got a called 'a fucking cunt' for trackstanding once. i took it as a compliment.

same, happened a few times. last time a pedestrian grabbed my rear wheel and pulled. fell. lots of laughing. would've hit him if it weren't for his 3 or 4 friends he was trying to impress and the 2 'police officers' chuckling on the sidewalk. fucking cunt.
i still would've had a go at him.
I bet if someone had banged on a car bonnet for no reason the Police would not have stood around laughing.

• I'm always half expecting someone to kick my wheel or something on the rare occasions when i bother trackstanding at lights. But so far all i have had is pretty girls smiling at me.

• I have edited my story for the sake of accuracy. Neither one of us passed on the inside, I'm bad with my directions. No, he passed on the outside then trapped me between the bus in front, the curb on my left, the car behind, and him just that bit ahead of me and too close on my right.
The funniest thing is that he was clearing trying to catch up with me, using me as his pacer, because he said, "I've been catching up with you for all these last blocks" or whatever... So like you were racing to catch up with me and now you're upset I didn't notice!?!?!?
Ugh... I'm still really pissed off. I really hate the C word used as a derogatory term, especially by a man. Call me a C*ck or a D*ck and I might not chase you, but use the C word and I'll stalk you till your wetting your lycra...

Oh and I didn't race him. I'm really slow but this guy had a gagillion gears and I passed him without trying. I just chased him in a sort of pepe le peu style. He kept looking back to see if I was still there (and I was).

• I always make a point of bumping Ma3ks rear wheel when he track stands, works for me :D

• roxy I really hate the C word used as a derogatory term, especially by a man.
Dont ever go to Scotland.. you will be doing 25-life before you know it ;)

• Roxy where was this? I had a couple run-ins with various geared men on Clerkenwell Road (one time when Matt and I were riding 2 abreast pretty close and this guy attempted to ride in between us, then started shouting) - there's always a plague of midlifecrisis morons around Clerkenwell and Farringdon trying to burst a blood vessel, flailing around, pedalling furiously and clicking their gears, because they hate being overtaken rather effortlessly by ladies on nice bicycles....

• It goes to show that just because, we're all riding bikes, we're not all the same. I like to think it's a common ground but some cyclist's are so aggressive for no reason. I like the way you remained polite to him...really got his goat up!
That's how I try to be - in a patronising way. Ha ha.
When I do get pissed off I pull out this:

We should seriously have some fixed wheel medieval games!

• Let's kill someone ! And eat then eat the body !

• It is just the same as drivers when you are driving some are just really rude pushy and aggressive, they cause most of the accidents. The poeple that are cycling like that are they same ones that when they drive cut people up and rec their engine all the time.

I feel your pain Roxy.

• Just lately, I've had more patience and kind words from cabbies than cyclists!!!!!!!
It can't be true can kit?

Its not used as a derogatory term in Scotland more as a friendly replacement for a full stop!

When I worked as a courier in Edinburgh there was this really annoying guy who used to try and race all the couriers on his way back from work in his full lycra giving really serious stares to you. One day it really annoyed me so I thought I would just loose him through some traffic lights but he just stayed on my wheel blatently not concentrating on the traffic just following me, I then took him through another junction by going on the wrong side of the road and he followed me in but didn't seem to make it out the other side. Saw him again though so he never hurt himself but he definately seemed a bit less cocky.

My favourite commuter there used to ride home from work on a carbon fibre Colnago still wearing his suit, he was fast and always looked like he was having the time of his life compared to all the other suits walking about looking like they were about to go to work rather than leaving.

who did you used to courier for and when? I used to courier in edinburgh about 10 years ago. Hellish in winter.

• Some people are offended by that word, some aren't. i don't think it's just about geography.

Its probably middle english, possibly from a nordic root i believe. Its only a word.

I adore them, so i don't see it as particularly useful as an invective. Unlike 'road-bike guy', which has gotta be the best dis' ever.

• All the best swear words are Germanic. Fact. But it seems those Latinate ones aren't bad either…

As far as I'm aware (transl.: a swift google might prove me wrong, but I can't be arsed), "cunt" is a curtailed derivation of the cuter 19th century (?) "cunny", which shares the same roots as the entirely inoffensive "cunnilingus" which stems from the Latin "cunus" (or "cunnus," I don't recall), which refers to the visible sections of female genitalia, also temed "vulva."

Funny how some words are taken harsher than others. There was a time when "cunny" was akin to "willy" on the offensometer, and "prick," only slightly, though still notably, worse. Now "the c word" is among the worse out there, apparently, whilst call someone by any range of aggressive slang terms for the male pudenda is totally acceptable if you're over the age of eight.

If anything, it might suggest some kind of inherent "dirtiness" towards female genitals. But I'm sure you'll all disagree. Just a thought…

• Swift google shows this - I wish London still had the same street names:

A reader has asked about the word cunt, wondering if it had something to do with "cunning" as in "a cunning woman was a negative thing". It has nothing to do with cunning (which is related to the verbs ken and can) and everything to do with what it means today: "female genitalia". It first shows up in a list of London street names of about 1230. That street name was, interestingly, Gropecuntelane, one of a warren of streets and alleyways all given over to the lowest forms of prostitution and bawdry. It lay between Aldermanbury and Coleman Street (where the Swiss Bank stands today) and it belonged to one "William de Edmonton". Curiously, medieval Paris had a street name with an identical meaning - Rue Grattecon. Oxford and York apparently also had similar versions of that street name.

Cunt is believed to derive from a Germanic root *kunton "female genitalia", which also gave rise to Old Norse kunta (ancestor of Norwegian and Swedish dialectical kunta and Danish dialectical kunte), Old Frisian, Middle Low German and Middle Dutch kunte, and the English doublet quaint. And, by the way, the word wasn't always considered derogatory, even though it is today. Be careful about assuming that a word's modern connotations must have governed its formation. By the way, no connection has been made between the Germanic words and Latin cunnus. The proto-Germanic root of cunt is ku- "hollow place", while the Indo-European root of Latin cunnus is (s)keu- "to cover, to conceal", the etymological meaning of cunnus being "sheath".

• Touché. Though I must admit that I'm not convinced by cunt's lack of connection to cunnus. But then that's just me.

cunt
"female intercrural foramen," or, as some 18c. writers refer to it, "the monosyllable," M.E. cunte "female genitalia," akin to O.N. kunta, from P.Gmc. *kunton, of uncertain origin. Some suggest a link with L. cuneus "wedge," others to PIE base *geu- "hollow place," still others to PIE *gwen-, root of queen and Gk. gyne "woman." The form is similar to L. cunnus "female pudenda," which is likewise of disputed origin, perhaps lit. "gash, slit," from PIE *sker- "to cut," or lit. "sheath," from PIE *kut-no-, from base *(s)keu- "to conceal, hide." First known reference in Eng. is said to be c.1230 Oxford or London street name Gropecuntlane, presumably a haunt of prostitutes. Avoided in public speech since 15c.; considered obscene since 17c. Du. cognate de kont means "a bottom, an arse." Du. also has attractive poetic slang ways of expressing this part, such as liefdesgrot, lit. "cave of love," and vleesroos "rose of flesh." Alternate form cunny is attested from c.1720 but is certainly much earlier and forced a change in the pronunciation of coney (q.v.), but it was good for a pun while coney was still the common word for "rabbit": "A pox upon your Christian cockatrices! They cry, like poulterers' wives, 'No money, no coney.' " [Massinger, 1622]

• You guys are such geeks. ;-p

• His use of the profane probably indicates that he is not a cunning linguist.

Maybe he was held in low esteem by his peers and siblings when very young.

Pity him his outfit, fitness, lack of trafic sense, and finally (but by no means of least imprtance) pity him his obvious lack of manners.

The stupid c**t.

I've worked for Diamond and QED about 4 years ago. The winters are fairly grim, I only did one and that was bad enough. Who did you work for? I met up with a few of the long termers over Xmas who might of worked with you.
