  • hippy Fucksake it's £3-4 difference. Buy both and test ride them both and make your own minds up.
Or, buy Conti, I hear they really rock the streets!

Contis it is then - if Hippy says so anyway.. I'll start the new thread "Hippy is right, Conti tyres kick ass!

Think you're right though Addie, standard rubinos are 60tpi

  • I have to yield to the fact that I thin it was Hippy who told me that in the first place.
Which is why my Pros are in the post from Wiggle as we speak. Hopefully.

  • k

  • any one try soma everywheres? i hear good things and only 2 dollars more then aradillos

  • Soma "Everwear" you mean.
    I've not seen them here.

  • hmm ill have to give them a try, get hooked and never be able to find them again

  • chris crash any one try soma everywheres? i hear good things and only 2 dollars more then aradillos

    From the "Group Buy" thread:

Brooklyn Jack Crank If you're doing a group buy on tires or straps DO NOT GO SOMA. That shit sucks. The everwears are heavy as shit and ride super dead. Though they're fine for skidding the sidewalls are shite and blow out dumb quick so it's not worth it. Gatorskins or rubinos are always a good choice. Also, their straps aren't laminated and fall the fuck apart/stretch like your sister when I'm done with her. For tubes stay the hell away from continental. Other than that, group buy = good idea.

BJC: absolute wordsmith, by the way.

  • Anyone know whats up with conti tubes? I got a few as they were a quid with tyres from ribble, silly decision?

  • Use 'em and report back..

  • So after having my bike nicked I resurrected an old garage find of a road bike.
Nothing fancy, but it does the job (501 frame/105 groupset).

I decided to replace what was left of the disintegrating 15 year old tyres with some nice new 23c Gatorskin clinchers (standard, not hardshell or folding).

Since fitting them I've had punctures almost daily. There doesn't seem to be an abnormal amount of sharp stuff on my way to work. I've been riding the same route for about two years (on inferior quality tyres) and my problems only started when I 'upgraded' to gatorskins.

My front tyre now has a 1" gash and is completely unusable after less than a hundred miles.

I've had Gatorskins recommended to my by a fair few people, some of them from this very forum.
I'm running them at about 110-120 psi (which is what conti recommends).

    So is it just me?

Should I be looking into other options from ga2g's magical list of tyres?

  • i run gatorskins, they are amazing.
    seriously good tyres for me.

  • yes. next.

  • Bore off! I've had literally 3 punctures in 2 years on Gators, and I ride down Commercial 'lane of broken glass' Street daily.

  • It's deja vu all over again for me.

  • You get punctures?

When I had a gatorskin it punctured a few times. My Maxxis Refuse have never punctured.

Maxxis Refuse FTW. They're just better.

i mean, a puncture once in a while is not the end of the world. but this is pretty much every time i take my bike out.
i can't go for a long ride because i know my tyres won't take it.
never had an issue like this until i bought the gatorskins.

    maxxis refuse eh?

  • Over a year, don't know how many miles (at least 1500), rode across heaps of broken glass a few times, fucking awesome.

  • I don't work for Maxxis btw, they is Australians.

  • never had a problem with my gators.
I commute every day on them, and regularly ride through broken glass as someone keeps smashing bottles into the exact same bit of the cycle lane regularly.
Been riding the same route for the past six months with no punctures as yet.
They are 28's though. Could that make a difference?

  • I seem to remember someone said they are quite variable - some good batches, some bad.

That would support my experience, they drove me nuts.

yeah, i read that somewhere else actually...

  • Never had problems with my gator skins and punctures. they are shocking in the rain but never
been affected by punctures. I have them on most of my bikes.

  • Maxxis Re-fuse are the fucking bee's tits. Soft tacky compound that grips in all weather and epic puncture protection for a light folder and not stiff and slow like most wired beads.

  • I've shit loads of punctures with gators too

  • i know people who love the gatorskins but...

i ran them for a while, after being told they were great tyres. had the same problem as mr k. punctures pretty much every time i went out, couldn't do long rides. plus they look awful.

current (summer) set up is maxxis refuse up front and specialized roubaix armadillo elite on the rear. been running those tyres for about 18 months and have never ever had a puncture in either.
