"Like chain lubricant that you spray the wrong direction and onto your rim, this post shall be smeared across eternity waiting for the brake-pads of our creator to reveal their hidden presence.."

Ahem.
That bit of downtime was me adding another 756MB of RAM to the server. It wasn't quite cutting it on 256MB.
Let's see how this works.
-
• #29
Ha, not a bad idea. I do so hate the sound of a creaking pagefile.
-
• #30
^excellent work Vb - we barely noticed... ;-)
Like petals scattered by an Autumn breeze, knowledge shall be scattered unto the ether. or something. eh JOL? -
• #31
pagefile on linux? swap you mean.
I dunno, I was kinda hoping that as I'd got linux to run happily in 60MB that the 256MB was going to be enough. Didn't quite turn out that way, every apache2 child process was using 20MB, and MySql is sucking all of the CPU, fun!

Anyone good at optimising MySql5? If so could you take a look at my my.cnf and offer a tweaked version?
-
• #33
Sorry VB, I didn't mean to offend with my Windowsisms ;-) And I know f all about MySQL. Good luck...
-
• #34
Are you hosting from home or something now vb?
-
• #35
They give you a blank Linux image, you download and compile everything.
-
• #36
Blimey, that hosting looks pretty good value for money, especially considering the control you get.
-
• #37
Providing you can build apache, MySql, set up the DNS, and the virtual hosts, and get MySql installed, are happy on the command line, etc, etc.
It's hosting by developers and for developers. There is no hand-holding at all.
That said, it's a hell of a bargain if you can do that stuff.

Don't understand it all what it says but it seem cheap. LAMP servers have got such good documentation on the web. I don't know any thing about setting up the security but even I managed to set up a little server on my laptop as localhost just as a experiment to run word press.
-
• #39
Yeah, it's good. Do think about security though, an SSH command line on the default port will be attacked hundreds of times a day. If you don't think about security you will lose the server pretty quick. Putting LAMP on your laptop is not the same as putting it on a static IP on a fast web connection and advertising your existence (through DNS).
I'm pretty sure all this tech talk bores people.

yawn!!
edit but well done there sir.

Yeah I know I just did it as an experiment to get a (very) basic idea of what was involved in a web server. Reinstalled my laptop now so no server but I shall take a look into it.
Anyway you right enough tech talk back to the bikes and work.

Perhaps it would if I understood what the funk you lot were on about!!
I have one question if you may, VB. A couple of months back the old .com site was barred from both mine and Brett's work, you gave us the following list of addresses, all of which incidentially slipped past the Websense scanners.
http://www.londonfgss.co.uk/
http://www.londonfgss.co.uk
http://londonfgss.co.uk
http://www.fglondon.com
http://fglondon.com
http://www.fglondon.co.uk
http://fglondon.co.uk
http://67.19.83.27Are these to be moved over shortly, or is there only to be the .com site from now on, thus meaning that we'll be barred from the site whilst at work?
Cheers!

I'll move them over when I work out how ;)
It may take me a week to figure out. So give me a chance with that.
The direct IP address won't work. Though you can use your hosts file to make it work.

• #44
Ok VB, thanks for that :0)

SamThose domains all now work (or will do so shortly when the DNS flushes through).
The direct IP address does not work as I am now using virtual hosts and the IP address doesn't go directly to this website.

who or what attacks the default port and for what reason?
-
• #48
Scripts attack SSH using dictionary attacks against common usernames in the hope that they gain access because of weak passwords. Once they've gained access they can usually attempt to use known flaws in older versions to try and elevate their privileges to take over the server. Once they've done that they have a nice untraceable method of sending lots of spam or spyware, etc. They don't care about what is on the server, they just want another server to add to their numbers to have an increase in capacity to do things like spam.
So long as your passwords are strong, you run SSH on a non-standard port and you jail shell all accounts and stick to using sudo or su and never login as root and keep all software up to date as well as block traffic from those who attempt to attack your server... you're fine.

i don't understand any of that but it sounds like you know what you are doing.

good work DK
Too much hassle, just insult people and rant on the new server.
May have to do more than usual to keep the daily average up though as this mornings utterances are gone.
You wankers :]
