  • How the devil did you know that from that photo?!

  • you can see from the way the round tube becomes the flat dropout, makes more sense once you have cut a couple up and know what to expect from the overall look of the join.

  • the ones i was thinking of must be welded, and they would make your rear spaceing 3mm skinnier. they are stainless steel, but i cant rember their name for the life of me. any way he finished up today, and it was bad ass.

  • alright guys/girls heres another one for you.

recived the drops today, looks nice, but im facing a few problems. they're pretty small.. I wont be able to make a "notch" in the frame and fit them and weld. I can place them closer to the seat tube than the originals. maybe the easiest and safest would be to just fit some extra tubes overlapping the old ones and then weld the drops on to the "extensions". Anyone done/seen anything like that?

    thanks

  • please resize the pics if you have realised!
Nice dropouts. Shame about your paint though... ;-)
EDIT - thanks :-) Its a shame that the dropouts you bought dont have longer 'bits' sticking out..

  • As much as he (the guy in the video) may be a cnut, the idea is nonetheless pretty cool.
    Recycling= more snow= awesome!
Also it has cycling in it (so it must be good).
In fact when I have some free time i'm making me a bag.
(but in no way is it going to be anywhere near as awesome as the one scott made me- that is one hell of a bag- i still keep finding stuff to play with)
Seriously- Get one- they are so useful- and the one i have fits perfect on plane restrictions!
Oh and welcome! Def. want to head up to sweden sometime.

  • eyebrows Def. want to head up to sweden sometime.

make sure you dont stay too long. and visit during summer. -then i bet sweden is alright.

edit: just realized I thought of London as something equivalent to Sydney or L.A in terms of weather. At least we've got some snow.. or usually we have snow this time of year, keep on recycling your plastic bags!

  • I'd probably remove the old dropouts, then see if I could bend the tubes (technically called cold setting if your not a gorilla :) )to allow the slots in the tubes to meet with the tang on the dropouts. I did this a little with the seat stays on my MTB, I brought the ends of the seatstays about 15mm further forward with no ill effects (actually the seatstay seat tube join broke on one side, but that looked like a crap braze from the factory anyway). You will need to bend both seat and chainstays together but I think it could be done ok :)

extending the tubes is not going to work.

  • its a LOT of bending. a lot more then i would be comfortable with. the extension is not going to work.

  • Did some welding today, or a "friend" of mine did. Turned out okay, the spacing is perfect at they´re completely parallel, what more can you ask for?

This is by the way how the build is going to turn out as its finished. the stem should be black thou, spokes as well and the nipples should be gold (well not actually "made of gold", but you get me)

  • aidan yeah....my sisters used to do it with hulla hoop packets

  • i think you should have brazed them not welded, from what i remember my old man saying (he used to demonstrate tig/gas/arc welding and brazing) they are dissimilar metals stainless and mild steel so would need a specialist welding rod, also the drop-out and tube are different thicknesses so there is a heat and penetration issue you are likely to blow holes in the tubing while not getting the weld penetration into the dropout. it wouldn't surprise me if the weld is just sitting on top of the metal. I may be totally wrong and a skilled welder has used the correct filler rod and the welding may be good but i wouldn't ride that bike.

  • that is not right, at all.

  • what's more, you now can't remove the drop outs by heating (as you do with braze) you'd have to cut those out, leaving you with fucked up tubes.

I'd go so far as to say that bike is pretty much fucked now

  • naaah. add a suicide hub and we're all set

  • ha!

  • that's great news!

It sure looks like shit but im pretty sure the welder knew what he did... or maybe he didnt... we discussed brazing, but I couldnt for all in the world get the distance to the seat tube long enough if I did that.

Im gonna use my static engineering mechanics skill to make a few calculations.

how about adding on some of this:

Alright give me serious replies on this one: How can I make a decent test to see if they works?

  • Ride the fuck out of it. If it breaks its no biggie, it'll just be like a drag brake. Make sure you don't have anything too pricey on the back and just ride it and enjoy it.

  • cant see any pictures.

where did you get gold coloured spokes

  • Just ride it, if it snaps its not strong enough.

  • i think the cause of the worry is that if it does break while riding there's a possibility of injury..
i don't think riding it to see if it breaks is such a good idea.

I think it will be ok. It looks to me as if some of the old dropout was left on the frame. The small amount that was actually already ataching the tubes to the dropout. The new dropout pear to be welded to this. This gives you some good meat to weld to, similar thickness of metal welded together, because of the this factor the two pieces of metal would have been ground to make a v so that full penetration could occur.. Not to much to worry about as far as over heating the metal, add to that that the bike is not a liight weight super duped tubed machine. I say ride it for a while unpainted. Check the drop outs every time you finish riding, take out the rear wheel and give it a good look. If every thing seems ok after a few rides which get progressively tougher you know it is fine.

  • aidan i think the cause of the worry is that if it does break while riding there's a possibility of injury..
i don't think riding it to see if it breaks is such a good idea.

If it was something on the front end of the bike where a failiure would lead to you being thrown over the front then I would be much more cautious, but if the back end collapses the chances of a big accident are MUCH less.

  • of course...but still a chance,a chance i wouldn't take.

  • Take a chance

    Take a chance on me!
