and then just filled up with brass and filed off?

  • PM me if your interested?

  • definately interested.
If you can fix it that would be cool.

  • Over the last couple of days Ive been hearing a creaking sound coming from the chain / bottom bracket area. I did recently tighten up the chain tension, so thought it might have been binding, but after loosening it back it still made the same sound.

Looking at the chainline, it is also maybe about 1-2 mm out. So possibly that.

But if not, does this look like a crack to you, ( near the bottom of the seat tube lug) or just scratched paint?

    I appreciate any advice.

  • Clean it first.

    Then take a closer look.

  • Looks like a scratch to me, but it's impossible to tell just from the photo. Follow dmcz's advice and give 'er a rub down and take another look.

  • Will do. Cheers.

  • scratch to me

  • scratch. cracks tend to 'ground' themselves like lightening, to the brazed shoulder. take a file to it to make sure.

  • Also when last / have you ever regreased BB or pedals? I wouldn;t take a file to nice paintjob 'til you've had a look at the obvious places that creakyness might occur. I have recently regreased a creaky pedal and its still doing it... so maybe switch pedals if re greasing the BB doesn't fix it.

  • Well I finished building it about 2 months ago. So everything was greased up then.

The chain does not sit absolutely central on the chainring, but more over to the right. But then again it never creaked before this.

  • Well I seem to have narrowed down the creaking to the left hand crank/bottom bracket area. The bottom bracket is Shimano Un52, which is a sealed cartridge BB, so that cant be regreased.

So im thinking the noise is from either bolt/crank connection to the spindle of the BB, or otherwise the pedal (but it doesnt feel or sound like its from there).

Either way, I was going to get the frame repainted at armourtex anyway, so would be dismantling everything soon. I just wanted to eliminate a crack, otherwise there wouldn't be much point painting it.

  • Contrary to most advice it sometimes helps to lightly grease the BB axle taper before refitting the crank. Just don't wind the crank too tight. Another source of creaks are chainring bolts which are not quite tight...

  • Thanks, I did grease them before fitting the crank, but will do it again soon. After really trying to tighten up the bolt on the crank today it did make some difference to the creak, but after a bit of good riding, it was also fairly easy to unscrew without too much effort.
So im not sure if they're coming loose from over tightening the first time round. I think it needs a close up inspection.

  • check your pedals for the creaking noise

  • Bollocks.

I think my frame may now also be cracked. Riding to the EHBPC this arvo, heading south over london bridge there's a seriously bumpy section at the beginning of the bridge. As I was riding through it my bike started suddenly making creaking noises, which have got steadily worse on the way home.
I can't seem to find the exact location, but it is either at the top of seat tube or bottom bracket area. It only creaks when I sit down and hit bumps/rough surfaces. If I stand up and sprint away it's deadly silent. Also, If I hold the top tube by the seat tube and push downwards as I ride the creaking stops. I've had a cracked frame before as a kid and remember the noise it makes, so am pretty sure that's the cause of the noise. I think the crack must be hidden under the powder coat somewhere.

Does anyone know how long I've got before the frame will self destruct? I'd really like to keep riding it until I can manage to locate something else.

  • So, the noise stops if you "hold the top tube and push downwards", presumably this takes your weight off the saddle? If it's also silent when standing... isn't it more likely to be the saddle rails/post than a frame crack?

I find the rear bolt on my Thomson post needs tightening every few months to stop the creaking...

  • scratch mate

  • Checkmate.

  • i had creaking, and a tiny bit of the crank had suffered at the hands of the bb taper - I turned it on the spindle 90 degrees and that fixed it for a while but it didnt resolve entirely until i replaced my crankset.

prblem is on steel frames the sound bounces around all over the place so it's very hard to tell where it's coming from...

Worth a look I guess, I'll check it out.
