Gazelle? Does anyone know anything about them?

  • Just bought a Gazelle Champion Mondial Campag A (circa 1979) so may be asking questions in here if there are any snags, will post pics when it's arrived.

  • Oh I can't wait, and its.... AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION TIME.

    A: White tape, white hoods
    B: Blue tape, blue hoods
    C: White tape, blue hoods
    D: Blue tape, white hoods

Then imagine it with white post, blue seat, Miche express crank, chrome chain, Mavic chrome wheels. Enjoy imagining that, because all the available bits I currently have for it are black.

  • I would suggest either A or C.

If your proposed blue saddle is the SI Turbo then be careful because I bought one and it looked shit because it was the wrong blue, even with the limited amount of blue on my frame.

Lovely frame you've got - looking forward to seeing it built up.

  • E: white tape, gum hoods ;-)

(and silver post, cranks, chain and wheels (or gunmetalgrey wheels) brown or black saddle)

Call me old-fashioned but I was thinking along similar lines. Since there's black and white in the frame, my personal preference would probably be black saddle and white tape/black hoods (or gum hoods). I don't think I'd go down the rocky road of trying to match blues in different materials!

  • Good points about matching colours. On reflection blue tape with white hoods would look rubbish, so it'll probably be all white, although I'll look at blue hoods if I can get close colours.
To put on it I currently only have a chrome/black Sturmey chainring & crank, black EX seatpost and black Spoon saddle, chrome Cinelli Headset & bars, black 15mm rim wheels. So desperate to get back on the road that if the frame arrives in the next week I might have to use them, can't afford to replace bits for cosmetic reasons, but I will slowly buy more suitable bits, and use the existing bits on my next frame. It might not arrive until just before payday in which case I'll just go nuts on eBay, crank/ring, seatpost, saddle, wheels, the works.

  • Yes, looks like a Gazelle 753.
But Gazelle would never chrome plate a 753. Against Reynolds guidelines, tubing too thin for polishing and the chemical baths. Home jobby?

  • aa super in 71cm size ^
that seat tube goes on for ever

  • Did you see the droll description? "For really tall people, or small people that don't stop during cycling..."

It's mental looking I love it. But I am a small person so... :(

  • Mental indeed, it has the monostay and indented seat tube of an AA Super, but also sports eyelets for mudgards and is apparently branded a semi-race. To top it off it has what looks like a reversed top tube and extended seat tube of a time trial Gazelle with old style cable guides.

It looks like they made a Frankenstein gazelle with leftover parts in Dieren, but the 1986 Gazelle brochure simply presents it as the A-frame for tall people.

  • It's too bad I don't have time in Netherlands to browse, on Marktplaats you sometimes find nice stuff for a good price but shipping is of course rare. Anyhoo I speake the Dutch as a Dutch person in the unlikely event there's a language barrier Google Translate can't resolve ping me.

  • something fun for the taller gent...

This is an A / Semi Race in 70 cm.
Has nothing to do with time trial, although the same top tube was used, both have a wishbone seatstay and concave seat tube. I.i.r.c., the top tube was made like this for the 70 cm (was bent in the same shape as a ladies low instep) and after the first attempts with straight top tube, also used for lo pro time trial frames.
AA-Super and A-70 cm were introduced almost at the same time (around 1985).
Several hundreds have been made, so not that exclusive.
There are even a couple of 80 cm frames like this...

  • My Gazelle has arrived! Lucky I didn't buy any bits for it, as it's not white, more a sort of mother-of-pearl affair, and the blue is very metallic. Now: fun with headsets.

  • Correct. Old team colours.
    Ivory with Baikalblue.
The older the frame gets, the more yellow-ish.

  • So I decided to do the Dunwich Dynamo on the Lo-Pro... after about 10miles had a blow-out that ripped through the sidewall right next to the bead - changed the tube and carried on to Moreton where I noticed that the new (and only spare 650c) tube was bulging through the tear and very nearly clipping the brake pad... with nothing to fashion into a boot, I bound the deflated tyre and rim (no more front brake!) in electrical tape, pumped it back up to about 50psi and proceeded with caution...

Managed to thud (tape hitting tarmac) the last 100 miles with only a rear brake, Awesome fun! Surprisingly comfortable on a Lo-Pro too... can't wait for next year's!

  • i've seen three or so of those black ones in the last few days and they are rapidly becoming my fave colour scheme of all the gazelles

will you be adjusting the saddle gaston ?

  • looking lovely! it's only the 2nd black one I've ever seen

but... are the shifters fitted the wrong way around?

  • brake lever and pad are not period correct...

I try to follow a traditional set up for this kind of bike. It is the gift that I did to my brother for these 30 years, so I'm not seen use it. héhé
But this bike is functional and smart.

Thank you for the compliments !

  • can I trouble y'all for guidance as to what this might be worth complete on here?

need to move a few projects on to keep the peace at home and recoup some cash...

this is sadly a little too big... was considering putting north road bars and mudguards on it...

Its a 58cm seat tube, full shimano 600 ax group... any interest from the Gazelle fans here?

    Cheers,

    Matt

  • Dunno about on here, but on my extensive Fleabay watch list complete bikes in good condition seem to go for around £200-£300, more if they are rare or special. I couldn't tell you if that one is rare or special but looks in good nick.

  • @Matt - you might want to check the for sale ads on this forum, a lot of CM's are sold on here and I for one always leave the price in the ad after sale.
