Police fining cyclists

  • i dont know...

  • I ran the lights at evening rush hour at Bank Junction, a few weeks ago. 2 push bike coppers, waiting at the lights on Threadneedle St, saw me. I really couldn't be bothered dealing with a lecture/fine, so I thought 'Fuck this', and proceeded to U-Turn it up Princes' St, towards Moorgate. One of them shouts "Oi!", and turns on his handlebar siren (which is fucking LOUD by the way - i thought it was a motorcycle at first). I jump the Lothbury lights, and do all sorts of dodgy shit, going the wrong way around bollards, etc etc. I know i'm getting away from them, cos i'm on 23c tyres and they're on fat tyres, but I kind of came to my senses and stopped at the London Wall/Moorgate lights.

10 Seconds later, they jump in front of me, and in really out-of-breath voices, tell me to get the fuck off my bike, and tell me i'm under arrest. Uh-oh. So, they then question me, search me, all that jazz. In the end, they just gave me a red light ticket, so I guess I came out OK.

It was stupid, but i thought they were chasing me cos i ran the light, but they weren't, they were chasing me cos they thought I might have been a suicide bomber, or I had drugs/weapons on me. They told me if I had jumped the London wall/moorgate lights, they would have stopped chasing me and radioed for backup, and that would have meant police vans full of coppers with itchy fingers and M16's. I mean look what happened to De Menezes. It was fun for the brief minute it lasted, but it wasn't worth the risk over a fine.

(But if they are community support, then yes you should definately flee, and try and knock em over if you can. They can't do shit.
And they'll never catch you on mountain bikes with 15kgs of equipment..)

  • The police should spend their time pulling over and fining motorists that use their mobile phones. I ride from North West London to central London everyday and in a week see huge numbers of car drivers using their phones. I can only assume that nicking cyclist involves little or no paperwork. 3 points and a 60 quid fine is laughable for using a mobile. It should be a 5000 pound fine and an instant ban! The amount of ' school run mums' in their 4x4s using mobiles while they manouvre is astounding.

  • i know what your saying bikenut, some knob in a large blue van almost hit me because he was on the phone this morning, he was turning to go up the road i was going down but because he was on the phone his turn was really wide, its just that it happens pretty much everyday that i didnt put it up here earlier.

  • i notcied the day the smokeing ban came into effect, i never saw any one smokeing in a pub, but every day tons of drivers on mobs

  • I was going round Swiss Cottage a couple of months back, there was a guy in a lefthand drive car using his mobile whilst crawling along in the traffic, coincidentally sitting just at the side of the road was a cop car, the two coppers were out on the pavement enjoying a can of coke. They definetly saw this guy, I made eye contact with them and gestured towards the motorist, they looked at me then looked at the motorist, looked at each other then looked away! Couldn't be arsed,I felt like getting off my bike and taking a note of their i.d. numbers and reporting them.

  • Having said that I have noticed an ever increasing number of cyclist using mobiles while they are riding, so I guess everyone is at it.

  • I've just suddenly thought..

cyclists take over the pavements in protest about unfair traffic law enforcement.

if we were to push our bikes it wouldn't be illegal...

we could carry big blow-up mobile phones and banners saying cunt and things

its not against the law to be on the phone on the bike, because it isnt a motorised vehicle. also i think its a bit different being in charge of a block of metal that can go 60mph in matter of seconds compared to being at the side of the road goin along on the phone when the only thing you can hurt is yourself and your bike.

  • although they coul do you for dangerous cycling i suppose, although they have never stopped me whilst on the phone, not that i make a habit of it.

Are you sure the law is strictly for motorised stuff?
Where are these laws written down? Can I get access to them online or something? I wanna know shit like this so I can argue my way out of anything!
If I appear to know more of the law than the coppers they're not gonna wanna deal with me are they..
So, is this shit available online for my viewing pleasure?

  • in my experince knowing the law better then the coppers just pisses them off, and winds you up in the holding cell, then you do get released the next day with out charge

i think it probably is on the net but i dont know where, my dads a criminal barrister (all legal aid stuff) and had a look at the bill a while back, and so im sure that it is just for motorised vehicles, but i dont know the exact wording, sorry.

  • it will be on the net, try lexus nexus, it might only work for the us, and you have to pretend to be a lawstudent

  • Actually saw a kid a week or two back riding with no hands, in his left was the lead of his dog running at his side and in his right hand was his mobile! that was on Adilade Rd at about 5pm.

  • sounds like a good combination...

after a quick search of the parliament website i found the bill, and it says motor vehicle, hers the pdf link http://www.parliament.uk/commons/lib/research/rp2006/rp06-013.pdf

it is in clause 26 on page 57, ( i feel like such a neek for actually doing this)

  • joel, at least i know who to ask now if i get into trouble ;)

  • pj two weeks ago a copper and spastic in a CSO outfit stops me for STANDING over my bike on a pavement, not riding it, i'd pulled off theobald's road to answer my phone. he threatens me with a £100 fine, a criminal record, and is generally a rude moron with no brain, just a small sub-section of brain matter that tells him over and over 'you have got a brain, jeff, and you are a force for good'.

Being a bit of an empiricist lately, i have only this to say, they can go FUCK THEMSELVES.

with pigs like that it's no surprise.

  • Who's that above?

I like to call this one, MURTLE'S LAW

*Cycling when under influence of drink or drugs

    (1) A person who, when riding a cycle on a road or other public place, is unfit to ride through drink or drugs (that is to say, is under the influence of drink or a drug to such an extent as to be incapable of having proper control of the cycle) is guilty of an offence.

    (2) In Scotland a constable may arrest without warrant a person committing an offence under this section.

    (3) In this section “road” includes a bridleway.*

  • so i cant ride drunk through a wedding?

  • that pic was from the city police themselves... found it here:
    http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/london-police-launch-safer-cycling-campaign-13841?img=1

wonder who it is? he's fixed, obviously.

what do you get for breaking that law hippy? not £30 i guess?

  • I notice there's an email address for the coppers at the bottom of that link. If only you could send dogshits by email.
