  • for me, i like supporting my local cornershop and cafe and i like supporting small scale traders. i go into those shops/websites myself. yet i think i'm perfectly normal in feeling a bit intruded if that bloke from the new cornershop from across the road comes into my usual cosy cafe where i chat with my mates to sell me 6 cans of wifebeater for a fiver. it's fine if people do that, but i do think that an internet forum is in many ways the same as a neighbourhood and this is why some of us here would compare the act to those damn dvd sellers.

and as to that "you don't have to open the thread" theory:

    1. there are more than 1000 members on the forum i can't tell by looking at the thread if that guy's a "dvd seller" or not
    2. to argue that one doesn't have to open the suitably named thread is exploiting everyone's weakness in acquiring bike parts on a bike forum. personally, words like "sale", "hub", "wheelset", and you know what else normally darkens the rest of the page for me eliminating other threads

i honestly can't say i really mind people posting because there are potential bargains to be picked up, but so far i haven't actually seen anything i think is a really good bargain. and to be fair for the same sort of stuff if i really want it i'd rather pay roberto, jos, andypancake or odge to get it if they've got some, and you all know what i mean.

  • yep..

  • like i said, i don't mind people doing a bit of selling here and there.

just as an observation, if it's a list of NJS stuff as long as your arm, it's unlikely the seller put it on here for altruistic reasons.

"[People] aren't selling us this stuff to do us a favor." has already come up as a response to my view on this, of course this person is not being altruistic, no one has claimed that, certainly not me.

No one is intruding, nor forcing a sale, some bike parts have been posted in the classified section of a bike forum, some people click on the thread as they may have a passing interest in what is for sale, they don't recognise the poster and a kind of tribal morality kicks in.

Fair enough, if you are offended by the sellers audacity at trying to offload some parts without having first joined your gang or got to know you that's fine* for you*, but telling this person to 'fuck off elsewhere' effects those people (like myself) who may be interested in buying some stuff and are not hindered by a suspicion of the motives of people from outside their social group.

I must be honest here, the majority of opinion in this thread seems to be more on the side of what you are saying, so I might just have to accept that this is the way !

    :)

Hey ho, it's all good fun, nice pedals by the way.

  • That isn't what he is saying tynan, he doesn't want either Tescos, Asda OR some fly-by-night sole-trader trying to flog him stuff in his cosy cafe.

  • I'm pretty sure that those who are interested in the njs stuff will have whispered seller for prices/details etc, and be glad to have got hold of them to finish off their bike. and the more people on bikes the better I say. The forum is getting bigger and bigger and if you are into fixed gear in london and maybe now the uk, this seems to be the first port of call, so this is going to happen more often/ is happening more often. I flip flop on the issue, but my bikes built and I don't need anymore parts, but the urge is strong so I dip my toe into the selling threads even though I know I don't need whatever they are selling, just in case.
For my part if what they are selling is not over the odds and they introduce themselves (mother bought me up right) then this is an open forum and they have just as much right to sell something as someone whose been on here from the start. I take the position if you don't like/need what they are selling then no comment is needed.
yeah involvement in the forum, going out on rides - putting faces to fakenames, drinking beers is good/great - westside drinks anyone thursday about 6ish hammersmith, check the thread. But no one has to do it, personal choice and all that.

Ignoring that fact that his analogy is largely unrelated to the real world situation (some bike parts have been posted in the classified section of a bike forum) I genuinely love how the argument is set up :)

    Cozy/local/cafe(probably fair trade)/amongst friends/having a lovely chat

    V

fly-by-night/intruder/sole-trader/forcing knock off beer onto the 'kids' and shattering the warm cozy ambience with his relentless hassling.

(personally if I felt the need to stoop to such demagoguery to bolster an argument I would have at least had someone being raped by the evil foreign (got to be foreign) DVD pusher in the cafe toilets :D :D

Anyhow, back to the real world, (and an actual real situation):
I could have bought my bike parts from one of the big chains or online behemoths like Chainreaction, but I spotted something much better in a thread where the seller was basically being told in no uncertain terms to 'fuck off and don't sell your stuff here' - (he posted a single item that he had in response to someone asking about that very thing) - anyhow through all the venom and moral outrage I got his blog address, bought the parts cheaper than I could have got going to one of the big chains (he only had 6 of the parts so they went pretty quick) - and the seller - in response to the tribal panic at an outsider intruding on their world - agreed not to post again (indeed he has not).

So a few weeks go by and someone else I expect will be looking for the very same thing I was after, he may even make a post like the very one that started the thread I found my parts through - but at least one small scale trader will not be helping this bloke out (and any others already not in the fold will be chased off) pretty much redirecting trade towards the bank accounts of the usual high street/online companies.

This argument is going nowhere as far as I can see, we will all just have to agree to disagree on this one - but you know I am right ;)

  • Hear hear ;-)

  • I agree with Tynan on this, but can't think of much else to add to the argument. It's nice that web forums get a bit of a community feel, but it's still a web forum about bikes not a hippy commune in the woods.

  • so i should put my cloths back on then?

  • Don't be hasty dude - nudity is always appropriate

  • The guy who posted this unwanted NJS equipment (and started the current torrent!) did come on the Halloween ride. He had the yellow Keirin dripping with gold Nitto parts, and a blue (Ithink) frame protector (I'm sure there are photo's on here somewhere from D0CA). I think he had bought much of the stuff from Japan himself, and perhaps, following from the Hallow'een ride brough some extra stuff back from his next trip in the thought that some of us might be interested.

Just because some of us don't post all the time, doesn't mean we are not here. I am on here pretty much all day, but only post when I have something valid to add. Anyway, I understand that there is a community to protect, but many of you guys will have met PeterSmoleck on the ride and, I assume, just don't remember him.

  • if i only posted when i had something valid to say, i would have made 1/2 a post, almost kinda

  • Momentum I agree with Tynan on this, but can't think of much else to add to the argument. It's nice that web forums get a bit of a community feel, but it's still a web forum about bikes not a hippy commune in the woods.
lol i went to faslane peace camp one year and stayed for a few days to see what was going on, first day there I went to the supermarket and bought a cheese and ham pizza to cook at the camp.. after wondering why everyone was looking at me and muttering under their breath i was quietly told "...its a vegan camp by the way" so i hid the peperami and ate it later ..I suppose I was like a meat eating arrospok guy to them, oh well you live and you learn ;)

  • i like when people feel the need to force personal choices on others. espicly vegans who then go and wine when they go out with non-vegans to a place that serves mea that there is nothing vegan on the menu...

  • Lets Flog Gear and Sell Shit

    :]

  • Hi,

I am sorry if I have offended people by posting stuff on the forum. It seems like I need to justify myself before being alowed in on this forum. Well here we go: I have been riding in London since autumn 2005, fixed since september 2006. I have been to polo (never played though) about 3 or 4 times, been on the halloween ride, and helped organising the mash premier in december.

As for my reasons to sell stuff on the forum, they are certainly not altruistic. I just need to find a way to pay for my own parts... and I recon the stuff is on avarage a bit cheaper than from retailers. But again I am sorry if my add was too placative or not personal enough.

  • fair play.

  • petersmolick: although it seems it is this discussion is not about you,its an issue that crops up quite alot......
i used to make a fuss then i thought fuck it! there is no way me or anyone else is going to stop new members posting things for sale...

heal: just because you removed the peperami from the pizza doesnt make it vegan.....pizza's have cheese on them!
right im off to have a meat shake!

  • aidan right im off to have a meat shake!

I've never heard a wank called that before.

  • aidan right im off to have a meat shake!

    ^Too much information!
@petersmolick - the thread got derailed! Tynan keeps his beetches in check (whipping sound).

  • petersmolick // don't sweat it dude

i'm going to have a lie down now as the concept of aidan having a 'meat shake' has given me the vapours

  • AHA! so it's you, Pouya? and I'd just got my flaming torch lit! ;p

I don't think that anyone said you were being out of order for selling kit, it's just that there are a number of shady characters around who never bother to get involved in what's going on.

In my opinion, Tynan et al are right; there shouldn't be any obligation for anyone to introduce themselves to a public forum, but for a lot of people, me included, it helps to keep the community vibe going.

Now, let's sit in a circle and sing!

  • come to think of it that whole para is unmitigated filf

just because you removed the peperami from the pizza doesnt make it vegan.....pizza's have cheese on them! right im off to have a meat shake!
