  • so i'm sourcing parts for my next build, and i'm pondering risers vs. drops.
i've never ridden risers, but they look fun i would probably pair them with a 26.0 quill stem.

    any suggestions?

  • Don't discount bullhorns either...

  • most risers are 25.4, like drops, and bullhorns so you might wanna get a similar stem
    edit i like my risers....

You can very easily shim out that 0.6mm with 0.3mm of beer can or similar shim material.

  • eh i missed the 26 on the bay anyway... thats what i get for falling asleep.

  • 26mm quill stems contract evenly and most I've seen fit either diameter bar easily

  • What about flats? Though I'm planning on changing to some drops for a while.

  • they go with the bull horns, i dont like the way they look.

  • been using risers for a year and love em. but am just gonna try out flats just for a change really. i only miss drops (or bullhorns) on really long rides or really steep hills. risers, and flats, are perfect for city riding. when you get round to it then i recommend cutting em down using pipe-cutter tool.

  • if you want one had position then go for flats or risers, they all have a bit of backsweep but risers often have more of an upsweep too, risers give you a larger area of adjustment when you turn them than flats.

If you want 3 hand positions and a lower body position when beating into the wind or going balls out then you should get drops.

  • the week before last at polo i was the only person with drops, i was beginning to despair. then last week it was much better, more like 60:40 risers drops. a ridiculous amount of people are using risers now, and it's probably got more to do with the different riding styles and practicality as a result, if you didn't come to fixed from riding road bikes for years, then there's going to be little reason at all why you should use drops, especially if you're going to trick.

yeah Jonny, but ya Bufallo type risers are so cut down that you could equally just grip the stem alone ;)

  • I've tried all the various bar types, but Risers were the nicest so I'm stickin with - they just feel there, if you get me.

  • My other bike has risers. And as much as I love them, for slogging it out to any degree (distance, rain, hills, duration, etc.) I miss the variety of hand and general riding positions that drop provide. [/2cents]

  • Object17 What about flats? Though I'm planning on changing to some drops for a while.

WTF you realise you cant cut down drops

  • Drops are the business, really.

  • Risers are comfy tho'... I don't really have a preference...
IMHO Drops if you really wanna peg it, risers if you want a more relaxed ride...

  • Buy both try both decide, sell the other or keep for another bike or when you fancy a change.

  • do flats not get a look in?

  • speaking of risers, I could do with getting some that have a bit more rise in them, i'm not sure what i have at the moment (cheapo halfords job) but whats the highest rise I can get without falling into the domain of bmx bars with cross braces?

  • huge, you can get bmx bars with no cross brace, its all available to buy, just depends on what you want

  • i reckon something like this, but in chrome,
