The guy in blue door bicycles, that matt (talbot/coldharbour) uses seems to be v good and well priced

• #106
Out of interest, would you happen to know how much they charge?
-
• #107
mine was 30 per wheel including spokes i think
-
• #108
Cheap if it actually does included the spokes, normal labour charge is usually between £15-45 not including spokes.
-
• #109
was deffo inc spokes
all i supplied was rims and hubs -
• #110
That was a cheap wheel build. Retail cost for about 32 decent spokes is about £27, so the labour was 3 quid. Doesn't compute, unless I'm missing a serious discount on parts. (which I probably am.)

theyre dt comps which sell online at 33p
imagine bulk cost to builders is much less

• #112
To be fair, when I got a new back wheel build, the labour charge was £25 including spokes back in 2009 the year after the apocalypse.
Labour charge can varies depend on customer too.
imagine bulk cost to builders is much less
A lots less, but would still need to be sold at retail to keep the brick and mortar under their head.

Any recommendations for a North London wheel builder I can visit?

They sell at 33 p in Germany online, it's not a reference, unfortunately the RRP imposed by Madison is close to a pound each. That's the reason why most builders in the UK use Sapim instead, as Chicken Cycles is less greedy and the RRP for these is half of that of DT, yet with the same quality. Funnily enough, the retail price from Rose in Germany is less than Madison's trade price in the UK, even including the cost of delivery (at least for big orders)... problem is Madison is now so big that they really don't give a toss about things like spokes.

Can anyone comment on the quality of Kinoko's wheel builds these days?
-
• #116
Mine still ran true, and it have been through some serious abuse despite symmetrical lacing on the rear.

Any recommendations in east/northeast London?
To clarify, it's a rebuild I need - have hub, rim is tacoed.

Just cross-posting from the wheel discussion thread to give my mate Pete a plug....
I don't know if this is frowned upon, but I'm gonna give my lovely LBS a bit of a plug because he's just gone headlong into a more serious wheel-building business.
So the shop's Rat Race Cycles in Nunhead, but Pete's now calling himself The Wheelist: thewheelist.com/
I've had a few things built up by him - a set of Pacenti SL23s on Spin hubs (the Spin freehub is made of fucking cheese or something, the cassette dug in a lot more than I've seen on any other freehub, but other than that they're good) which are ace, a Velocity A23 built on my old rear RS80 hub, and a cheap but solid single speed rear wheel. All have done many kms and all are still solid and true.
Most of us know handbuilts are great, and a new venture could always do with a bit of help, so check him out if you're in SE15 or near.

Ah cool, RatRace is one of my locals - excellent shop.

What ugo says about DT Spokes vs sapim is very true which is why I use sapim.
If rat races wheelbuilding is as good as you say he won't need plugs the cyclist have a way of sniffing out the good shops. good luck to pete there should be more good shop based wheelbuilders.
RRP's are made up buy the distributor and it based on what customers a willing to pay. I am not sure about madisons margins but I don't think they are as big as you might think. I wouldn't be surprised if Madison have to pay more than Rose do for the same spokes. Madison don't get to sell DT Swiss wheels and forks which will limit the size of there orders and the discounts they get. Don't know for sure but I doubt it is a simple case of price gouging.

So, anyone got a good recommendation for a London wheel builder to build up a set of vintage 1940's wheels for my RRA?- Constrictor Conloy crescent shaped rims on a Sturmey rear hub and Powell large flange front?
ideally some one with a good reputation for building with used and vintage parts?
cheers
