£16k is absolutely fine, i've just moved out of a £500pcm flat into a room just off the top of brick lane and now pay £250pcm for a smallish room in a ok flat with some really great people. if you look hard you can find good deals on accomodation and if you cycle than living further out from the centre won't be a problem.
just after i left uni i was working part-time and earning about £700 per month (~£8500), it's not that hard.

I'm moving to London for 2 years and think I'll need to stay with family because rent appears too expensive for me
Any other hidden expenses {extra taxes etc} that I should know about?
Reading up on the net is useful but often confusing with conflicting information
There are loads of Americans on here who will be able to offer you advice having made the same move.

- Friend of mine who is a OHT will travel pretty far to work depending on where she is based.
Like zone 1-6.
travel time in london can be a strange one though, I mean Door to Door on the tube for me it's about 1hour 20min, Bike its 25-30mins...
First job i got here paid £14.5 I was fresh of the boat and pretty cluelesss then about payrates, It wasn't always easy but I survived. It taught me how to do things on the cheap here on many of the things I still keep up even thought I know earn an extra couple of pounds a week.
There is some really good accomadation deals out there you just need to be lucky sometimes to find them.

"One of" ;)
One day i want to live somewhere really cheap. Also warm. London is neither of these things.
I lived in Vietnam for 2 years. I could eat out for under $2, however I got a bit bored and moved to Japan. I then had too much to do and not enough money. It's so difficult to get a good balance. Im thinking of moving to San Francisco next year to see if it lives up to the hype. Though I think I'll get annoyed with the over enthusastic Americans and the hills. If only London had a warm climate, it would be a small piece of dirty/congested/noisey heaven.

the best way to actually save money on rent is to simply share a flat, it's doable to have a flat slap bang in the middle of London for £120 a month sharing with 1 or 2 other people.

actually this is the best way to save on rent.

Did it for a year - £25pw each for a three bedroom flat (just me and my then BF). Though if you are used to things like central heating and running hot water and floors without holes in them it takes a bit of acclimatising. -

I've just accepted a job offer and it looks like I could be moving down to London in a months time.
Does anyone know anybody thats looking for housemates or would be interested in a flat share?
My budget is pretty good, I can go up to 800 a month for rent (excl bills) and Im not all that bothered about area although somewhere close to Hoxton square would be practical.
Any help/ideas would be much appreciated -

Another recommendation for moveflat.co.uk; you should be able to find something nice for that dollah. Look around Angel, which is pretty close, and a little quieter that Shoreditch/Hoxton

Moveflat seems pretty good, thanks for the tip!
On a salary of 15k several years ago it cost me £100 a month to have a job. 'Course the job was in Croydon at the end of a very expensive train ticket - I still have no idea how to get to Croydon on a bike a decade later.
