  • Just a non-bike related bump.

I'm off to Berlin at the end of Jan. My GF has the evenings all locked up and planned so it's up to me to think of some things to do while we're there.

I'd like to do a good walking tour that relates to the Cold War as it's a period I'm interested in. But other than that I don't really know. I found a Bauhaus Museum that I thought might be good (although it's not a very Berlin thing).

Also does anyone have any good suggestions for where to eat for lunch that will also cater for veggies?

    Cheers.

  • (if it's still on in winter, not sure) Mauerpark on weekend, I think sundays? karaoke hipster watching.

I enjoy the reichstag, archi, but then again, i got the insider tour as my mate works there...

soho house rooftop for drinks, bit wanky but nice views.

a given, but get bikes and ride around... :)

  • double post

  • saw this recently for vegetarian (mainly 'fast') food - http://www.theydrawandtravel.com/maps/great-vegetarian-dishes-in-berlin-germany-nate-padavick#page_title in kreuzberg area.

http://www.slowtravelberlin.com is a good blog for berlin 'insider' tips, i saw they are running a 'GDR era' Prenzlauerberg tour http://www.slowtravelberlin.com/2012/06/29/beyond-kollwitzplatz-tour/ but not been, and maybe a bit obscure if it's your first visit.

I've been on the http://berliner-unterwelten.de/ and http://www.brewersberlintours.com/ both recommended.

    bauhaus is pretty berlin!

  • Berlin six-day- starts 24th january!

  • Walking down Karl-Marx-Allee from Alexanderplatz to Frankfurter Tor is brilliant if you're into Cold War architecture. It was the GDR attempt at building a grand boulevard, and though it's fading a little now, it's still really imposing. Halfway along there's a small museum to it in a cafe, and also a computer game museum which my friend visited and enjoyed.

Berlin is a mecca for vegetarians, there are tons of vegetarian cafes and restaurants, and most others are veggie friendly. I have a big list somewhere I'll try and dig out.

  • The Bauhaus museum is a real treat with a great gift shop. But don't take any pictures otherwise you'll have an old German lady hissing at you....

With that said it's very small so don't expect to take more than an hour or so in there.

  • +1 to the Bauhaus museum. It's also a really nice ride down there - the road down the South side of the Tiergarten is full of really quirky embassy buildings. The Saudi one is amazing.

Veggie lunch: Dolores for amazing burritos. Cookies and Cream for dinner.

Also: Teufelsberg. Everyone should go there. It's incredible.

  • The Mexican and Scandinavian embassies are also definitely worth checking out too around there. Also on the embassy front, the Dutch embassy by OMA near Jannowitzbruke is a stunning piece of architecture.

  • Planning a week or so in Berlin later in the year. Good to see lots of veggie stuff being mentioned, will take some notes!

  • Rollapaluza at Keirin Cafe on 19th January.

  • Cheers for the tips.

    I'll read up on them.

  • Man, reading this makes me want to go back :-( Though not sure I'd go again in the summer. Ever so muggy.

  • Not always. Last year was just particularly thunderific.

  • I know, I was there ;-)

  • Reply to the guy about your Holdsworth, fool.

  • Man, reading this makes me want to go back

Going at the end of the month for 11 days, sweeeet!

  • I'd love to be a tourist once and visit Berlin ...

Unfortunately I was born here and am becoming a grumpy German that hates annoying tourists and hipsters that infest Berlin.

... still wouldn't want to live anywhere else more.

  • I'm going to Berlin in June so I'll be sure to check out some of the places mentioned in this thread.

  • Rollapaluza Berlin Facebook page hope you can make it! http://www.facebook.com/events/317696818330022/317729431660094/
