  • How much rad-gnar can you shred on a bike designed for riding on an ultra flat track surface?

Will it have a back brake fitted? If not then the nice and sharp new disc brake will be compromised by the fear of being sent over the bars due to the insane h/a.

'Raise the front' I'm hearing. That'll do wonders for the steering. It'll turn it into a lame hybrid in no time.

Knobbly tyres? I'd rather ride good geo on street tyres than street geo on good tyres.

The asda shit bike I posted above was excessive, but I reckon even that would be more fun, cheaper and more reliable than a tinkered with pre-cursa. Though for swinley's manicured trails it doesn't really matter. Though I'd rather ride a step through shopper than a track bike off road

Edit- above was aimed at tester, sorry chak, not being mean

  • Thuekr's here is an FXE, but am sure he had a pre cursa before.

Alkali what's on your tits? He wants to try a bit of fixed off roading, not like he is looking to build a serious off road machine, just a bit of fun...

  • Yeah, not had a coffee this morning, sorry for rant. Enjoy whatever you ride.

  • But some bikes are likely to be more enjoyable in certain circumstances

  • Ooh, just had a thought about fixed off road. Skidding is very bad form, whether trail centre or otherwise. Just something to be aware of.

Naah, no worries. If I wanted soothing words I'd have gone into mumsnet. Well, the way I see it, I can't really lose either way. If it doesn't work out or bucks me to oblivion, it simply becomes a street beater and I'll abandon dirt to those that like squirming in it on weekends. Frankly though, if people rode up mountains on wooden carts back in the day, I can htfu and do some off roading on rubber tyres. I'm London stuck, there's not really much I can do with dirt here anyway

If I like it, maybe sell and fund a proper machine, if not, I'll go back to my rad fixie skidz! I know I'll enjoy it regardless, simple because its been over 10 years since I've ridden anything off road, including that shopper.

That's pretty much exactly what I had in mind.

  • Cross = towpath, not mtb

    Wut?

  • I apologised for being a trouser up thread Howard, sorry to offend.

  • In other news, RIP Privateer mag

  • This looks amazing, just what I'm after.

I'm in desperate need of an mtb, problem is the budget it tight, do you guys recommend building something up with eBay parts or getting a secondhand otp from the likes of gumtree to get me going?

Also TM what frame is this? Can't make out the decal on the DT

  • Cotic!

  • Yeah, a Cotic Soul

You might be able to pick a used Soul frame up then the build it up with a mixture of used and new parts. I'd be cautious about a used fork for a first build, so try to pick one up new.

What size are you? I have a load of MTB stuff I'm about to shift; 16.5" ali frame, Reba forks, SLX drivetrain...

  • I'm 510-11 and ride a 54-55cm road bike, pm me some details!

  • 456's are cheap and good, I like mine.

  • I'm 510-11 and ride a 54-55cm road bike, pm me some details!

16.5" would be too small. Forks are tapered so only fit a modern frame. I'll drop them on my for sale thread next week anyway and ping you a message.

  • Hey man, you know those CX forks I pm'd you about the other day. What's the fork length from crown to axle?

  • Internet reckons 398mm axle to top of crown.

Just thought I'd point out that this is Zdrenka's.

  • Right he is.... Explains why I struggled to find a photo posted by thuekr... Found it though.

  • I rode the Bear Bones 200 this weekend. 210km, mostly off-road, around 17000ft of ascent, 20+ river crossings, wet feet from mile 30. I got my black badge for doing it in under 24 hours. I took 20h 32m. It was fucking hard work, but thoroughly fun, really nice group of people doing the race, lots of banter whilst riding. Started at 10am, finished at 6.32am. Which meant riding for 12 hours in the dark around mid-wales. Winning time was by Phil Simcock, 13h 08m!

Anyone who wants a real challenge should try it next year. Fuck cyclocross.

  • ^ I've wanted to say Fuck Cyclocross for ages, for some reason I now feel qualified to do so.

  • I'm confused. What does that have to do with CX?

  • Nothing. I just wanted to say it.

  • Well done anyway - sounds epic. What were the conditions like?

  • Conditions were mixed. The start was about 20 miles of lanes and tracks, and dry, then crossing Cernau (exposed moor) was boggy and windy, with no defined path. Lots of forest roads, some great singletrack in places. Some evil climbs with parts up to 30% I reckon. After it got dark we had an long climb in the rain, then crossed another moor in pissing rain. Then it got warm, then it got cold and very windy! Had some sunshine in the afternoon too. The last 30k was just awful, unrideable bog tracks and near vertical climbs which you had to lift you bike up, then step up a couple of steps then lift the bike again (fully loaded bike too).

Basically, a lot of people (sane ones) would have hated it! But the Full english breakfast sandwich provided at the end made it all worth it, plus 5 cups of tea before driving home!
