Not gonna join you thanks, but was interested to see what was involved and whether completing the instruction course lead to a qualification as an instructor.
-
• #3209
Ride on the 28th sounds good - hope the course goes well.
-
• #3210
cheers
it should be interesting, plus i have some potential work once it is completed.

• #3211
Do you have your Mountain Leader stuff aswell DJ? Or is it on a things to do list?
-
• #3212
I am doing the MIAS Mountain Bike Instructor L1/2 this weekend

I then need to look into what else needs to be covered -
• #3213
The MMBC are running the L1/2 course this summer, I'm signed up, to go further you need mountain leader qualifications. Quitedifficult/costly here as we only have one mountain.
Best of luck with it.
-
• #3214
Initially I hope to get some work locally so the MMBC may not be required to start with.
Am quite excited but a little nervous - its funny as I am delivering cycle training and maintenance training myself so will be odd to be on the other side again.

You'd better learn to ride over some tree roots without falling on your arse DJ. Else you'll be the laughing stock.
-
• #3216
nah, it will bring a sense of humility to the occasion

really simple question: Im replacing a
Shimano Tourney 42/34/24 with Shimano Alivio 42/34/24 crankset
I never changed a crankset except for fixed ones :/ is there anything I must watch out for? -
• #3218
Which Alivio?

I wouldn't say there's anything particularly different. Check that they're compatible with your chain size i.e if you're currently 8 speed then your chain might be too thick for a 9 speed crankset.
Also, there are a number of BB fittings so check that it is compatible with your BB.
From a quick google it looks like the tourneys are for square taper and the alivios are for octalink in which case you would need a new BB, but you may want to double check.

Looks like the FC-M410 is square taper*, so you just have to pick the right BB-UN26 length to suit your BB shell.
*There are also Alivio chainsets in the M430 series which are Octalink, hence the enquiry. Octalink is the thing which can catch you out, because the early ones with short splines give a completely different chain line compared with the later ones of the same axle length.

• #3222
thanks fellas! is definatly not Octalink so I think its all fine.

How was it?

Really useful. Some similarities with the Bikeability training.
Bike checks and maintenance, clothing/helmet checks for participants.
Ensuring basic control skills, log hops, bunny hops, attack position, weight shift for descents, braking techniques. All done by eliciting and explaining, demonstrating, getting participants to imitate and then practice.
A fair bit on route planning, access issues, map reading, which was really useful, including practicing these. Breaking the ride into manageable segments, giving warnings of potential hazards, reminding participants of the relevant skills they will need to deploy. Managing groups on and off road, how to handle differences in participants ability etc.
It was interesting to be on the receiving end of training again, rather than giving it, so was quite aware of a lot of the actual teaching techniques being used.
A lot of it confirmed things that I have been doing already when out with groups at Swinley, but has put a little more formal structure in place too.

when you're out at swinley, you just ride off ahead.
It will be mine!!!!
