Was looking for bike-related stuff for this week's internal e-mail and came across this gem (original 1998 article also attached).
Sir
Last year you published our report on subcapsular liver haematomas caused by bar ends in mountain-bike crashes.1
This publication was followed by a broad and extensive response from the local and international press in various newspapers and journals. All German cycling magazines and many other popular sports and lifestyle magazines published our recommendations. Even Time magazine, Newsweek, and the world's largest cycling publication, Bicycling, referred to your report.
Our recommendations were followed by the industrial factories, and most of the dangerous bar ends vanished from the market. As a result of this broad response, in 1998 we observed only one case of a subcapsular liver haematoma, despite an increase in the number of mountain-bike accidents.
This result represents a tremendous success in trauma reduction made possible by The Lancet. There are not many publications that have had such an immediate and distinct impact on saving costs and lives.

I have to go up to Wigan sometime over the next week or so for a family thing, but I'm planning on taking a bike and spending a few extra days there riding. Is there anywhere decent that's within about a 20-30 mile range?

yeah, I'm in. It's a good race. Serious amount of climbing though.

Taking the train down? Weighing up giving it a go.
-
• #10514
That's the plan, provided Southern Rail don't complicate things.
Done any of these longer races before? You should do fine given all your riding lately. Just make sure to eat regularly.

Cool OK might sort out a motor if the train situation looks bad in which case I might be able to do lifts.
Done a couple of big races like Torq 12, mountain mayhem and Torq 6 so yeah, just gotta keep eating :)
Water might be a challenge if this heat keeps up - there's none at the venue by the sounds of things.

Trains look okay at the moment.
There's definitely water at the pavilion down by the finish line they use for the cross races. I think it's usually open. I didn't die drinking it a few months ago.

Due to the Stanmer Pavilion burning down their is no water on site. Please make sure you bring your own supply!

Just about recovered from the Exmoor MTB marathon this weekend - I think I underestimated it. Plenty of technical single track climbs (Porlock is unrelenting!) and the descents were less tame than I was expecting. The rocky descent from the top of Dunkery was fun.
I got passed by a fair few serious XC types going up, but I managed to get a few of them back on the descents...

You should do the Braunton 150!

That SSCXEU after party got out of hand then?

Need some new grips for my XC biek. Need something that will inflict minimum pain on long rides on a stiff bike with narrow bars that doesn't have a whole lot of travel.
Recommendations anyone? @gabes probably has some good suggestions?
can we do afternoon? could do 12-4 or something like that
