  • So it feels like it's about forty degrees below zero, and you've worked up a righteous hunger pedalling like an animal around town, and you're a bit fat like me and have been looking forward to lunch since breakfast. You need somewhere you can eat fast and aren't made to feel bad for dressing like a tramp...

Where do you go? Struck me that there are a few places I'd ride out of my way to eat at, and I'd like to hear yours so I can broaden my gluttonous horizons... Mine are:

Pellicci's, Bethnal Green Rd for a fry-up or a roast dinner
Taro, Brewer St. for a £9 mixed sushi or the awesome £7 chicken teryaki don
Harry Morgan's, Market Place W1, for chicken soup with dumplings or a salt beef sandwich
Harrington's Noted Eel, Pie and Mash shop, Tooting Broadway (for fine French dining, obviously)

  • If you fancy some indian in the West End

Rasa Express @ Charlotte St, Euston Road and Stoke Newington; Keralan meal boxes for about £3.50
    Time Out says

or the canteen at Indian YMCA for lunch Fitzroy Square

For great lebanese shwarmas etc. Taza La Plaza in the food court in Plaza shopping centre on Oxford St.

  • Ten Ten Tei - almost directly opposite Taro on Brewer Street. A Japanese ex of mine introduced me to this place, and I am eternally grateful to her for that. Possibly my favourite restaurant in the world. Their nabeyaki udon and oyako don never fail to make me happy.

The Premises, Hackney Road (next to the Mecca Bingo!) - great all-day breakfasts, bangers and mash etc., then at about 6:30pm, they become a pretty decent Mediterranean barbeque joint (think high-quality kebabs, mezze and lamb chops). Plus, anywhere with Nina Simone on their wall of famous customers always gets a thumbs up.

Balans, Old Compton Street - brash, loud and very gay, but where else can you get roasted duck breast with gratin potatoes at 3am?

Sunday lunch at The Royal Oak, Columbia Road - pricey, but oh so good.

  • Hare Krishna - Around Inverness St/Arlington Rd (NW1), and i've also seen them outside UCL on Gower St. They're there certain lunchtimes...

It's free, but you can also donate. They're good people..

    which is what where?

I haven't noticed it, despite living in bloody tootin innit for over 3 yeards

  • ah it's that place in selkirk road

  • Noodle King - Bethnal Green Road

Cheap and tasty £3.40 for a HUGE plate of sweet and sour chicken and rice that I've never managed to finish

  • Kandoo - Edgware Road, lovely persian food, BYO booze, cheap, friendly, a stone naan oven and the fluffiest rice i've ever had.
Yauatcha - Broadwick Street - yes its a bit poncy and expensive but they do the best dim sum - the Venison puffs are to die for.
Colbeh - Marble Arch, Persian again, bit pricier but again lovely
Taro - Brewer St, fav Sushi place in London - cheap and always crowded, plus they get their fish from the same place as Nobu does.
Amalfi - lovely little traditional Italian on Old Compton St
Selkirk pub - Tooting, great roasts on a sunday and great pub with bar billiards.
Booths - Stoke Newington Church St, opposite the cemetry - best Calzone pizza ever.

and a quick mention of the sadly departed Copper Grill near Liverpool St, best greasy spoon in the city, all the waitresses were like your nan. brilliant

  • clefty

    t

    I must take issue here,
the food in the selkirk is fucking dire, and well overpriced.

the caveat being that I haven't seen or tried the roasts, but if they are of the same vein as the other rubbish...

  • RPM ah it's that place in selkirk road

Yeah, couldn't remember the name of the road, but it's the one that runs off the main road opposite Primark.

Glad clefty agrees about Taro. Had the mixed sushi AND the chicken teryaki don in there today, inspired me to start this thread... you have to go there when Taro himself is behind the little pay-booth, and marvel at how much he looks like the caricature of him on the board that swings outside the restaurant...

  • admittedly I haven't eaten in there recently , but I've only ever had the roasts, and they are good, you get loads. You're right tho the rest is well overpriced and a bit poncey. Its the only pub in tooting that i've found that isnt full of mad drunken irishmen to be honest - although a Jack Beards lock-in is an experience.
The one way down Garrett lane is nice (Leather Bottle?), but I've never eaten there - nice in the summer tho with the massive beer garden.

  • Oh the tiny little cafe under London Bridge station 'My Tea Shop' or something does cracking bacon sarnies, my dad used to swear by them.

  • yeah, never been in t'bottle

what are Irishmen? are they drunk white men who don't speak polish?

  • ooooooh Yaucycha quailty place real treat to go there and them venison puffs are wicked.

my cheeeeep eats chen yung (think its closed now opposite cuzon soho) BBq pork + rice andthe noodle soup was nice too Jen Cafe, Newport Place, for pearl tea and a chicken and rice dish and the dumplings are made on site :P yum

donzoko Kingly Street soft shell crab hand rolllllllllllllllllllllllll....hmmmmmm hand rollllllll and the sushi is good...

the chippie at the top of berwick st. Oi Oi saveloy

  • RPM yeah, never been in t'bottle

yeh i think they all live in Jack Beards now, exiled..

  • rg37 ooooooh Yaucycha quailty place real treat to go there and them venison puffs are wicked.

yeh going there next wednesday yum yum yum!

speaking of chippies, there used to be a really good old fashioned chippy (no kebabs or burgers) on Wilson st nr Finsbury Square, anyone know if its still there?
used to be a work lunchtime treat on a Friday.

  • nobody mentioned the bagel shop on brick lane!
smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel 1.80
crsipy bacon(lots) and cream cheese 1.70

I'm going to try noodle king, like chinese :-)

  • there's an excellent japanese restaurant right by mornington crescent station. cant remember the name of the place now

oh and try the korean restaurant near tottenham court road station (denmark st?). i think the place is called asam. packed with koreans and staff hardly speak english...but food is great

  • I'm gonna try that Yautcha-whatever place in Broadwick Street tomorrow, if I'm still in town at lunchtime.

I'm pretty sure they don't do crispy bacon at the Brick Lane Beigel Bake...

  • You fat bastards!

  • Anchor & Hope, The Cut, Waterloo - gastro-offal and game pub. it rules.

  • turpe

Big up the premises, used to be the nearest place of eating to my place of work. Eggs benedict there is beautiful. Also the baked potatos are pretty special.

  • i like beetroot in berwick street. but that's probably because i'm vegetarian. it's really carb heavy and good for loading up after big cycle rides.

and i like the premises... or anywhere that does a disgustingly unhealthy breakfast.

  • nimhbus Anchor & Hope, The Cut, Waterloo - gastro-offal and game pub. it rules.

got to second the Anchor and Hope. One of the best gastropubs in london. but pretty pricey.

The other question is why? You're in Tooting - with the best Curry Houses this side of Wembley!

Lahore Karahi on the corner of Totterdown Street - any curry place that is full on Monday lunchtime is doing something right
Vijay Krishna on Mitcham Road - serves a Jalfrezi that you can actually taste rather than a gob full of napalm
Jaffna House - Sri Lankan resteraunt that Sri Lankan people got to
Radha Krishna Bavan - South Indian with loads of veggie stuff
Kastoori - Indian via East Africa - a veggie menu unlike anywhere else. Make sure you order puris
