  • Tour of Wessex Day 2 Report

Started riding about 9 o'clock in the rain. The ground was already soaked with it having rained since 4am (I know because it woke me up). Lots of riders set off at about the same time so there were plenty of people on the road. Coming down a hill we saw someone's frame snapped in half, we think it was a Carbon Dolan. The rider looked ok.

The route was well sign posted, and we hit the first feed station after 35miles. The feed station was total chaos with riders trying to force as much into their mouths in as short a space of time as possible, and with as little talking as possible. The jelly babies were a hit.

At about midday, the rain cleared and the sun came out, so the jackets and leg warmers came off (went to all the effort of shaving my legs so was glad to show them off). Couple of cat 2 climbs saw the groups thinning out as we made our way forward. The hills were quite muddy and slippy so there was lots of wheel spinning by all; I tried to sit down as much as possible for grip. There was a second crash going round a corner at the bottom of a hill; one rider down and another rider into the back of him in an almost comical manner. The middle section of the route was fairly flat, and we ended up chain ganging with a good group at a fair lick. Second feed station came at 70 miles, which was welcome - by this time we were on our own. I stuffed my jersey full of Nutri-Grain bars and soldiered on. At 80 miles I begun to get tired, compounded by right cleat coming loose (so I couldn't pull up at all), and had to work harder with the left leg.

Luckily there was another feed station at 90 miles so I tightened my cleat and carried on. There was some confusion as to the length of the route, which was a bit demoralising when you thought you had about 10 miles to go and the organisers said it was more like 20. Managed to keep the spirits up and rolled home just over 6 hours at 107 miles. Didn't get lost once thanks to the well sign-posted route.

Bumped into hippy for a cup of tea aftewards, and it sounded like he'd had a good day too. Was glad I'm not riding today given this weather. Roll on dragon ride.

  • Well done illy. 6hr seems like a respectable time.

  • tour of wessex pics and results are up.

my first day was alright despite the first feed station running out of bananas and the second feed station running out of fluids! second day performance was poor...two punctures (sat around for few minutes after the first puncture and thought bout turning back), riding solo, bad back, heat and possibly fatigue got to me. anyway, just worked out that for my category (30-39yo) i finished 119th out of 137 riders who did the first two days. that'll do

where did you place overall fasteddy?

the pic below is at milton abbas. a really nice little strip. very picturesque

im in this weekend's chiltern100. might do it but it depends on weather, transport and condition of my back and if i can clean my bike by then. but prob the shorter 100km version.

also signed up for the dragon ride. not going to do that now as im saving myself for L2P. anyone want my entry for the dragon ride?

  • Ah shit.. I wanna do the Dragon Ride. Can I do Dragon and L2P? :)

  • Day 1: 156th from 792 finishers (5:42:08)
    Day 2: 214th from 426 finishers (7:00:37)
    Day 3: 58th from 121 finishers (6:19:19)
    Overall: 46th from 97 finishers (19:02:04)

Top 10 next year. Piece of piss.

  • Day 3 pics..

  • Jesus, you weren't joking about trees being across the road..I thought you meant a few branches may blown into the road.

Good to meet you last night btw.

  • Good work with those tree branches, hippy.

    Day 2:

    45th of 426 (06:03:07) - 10th in Cat.

  • illy, des, etc.. when are we gonna put in a team for one of these and smash rapha/condor, london dynaho? :)

  • why, is there a roller derby style crit comin up?

  • I didn't mean literally smash them fbr you maniac :P

  • damn. my only chance of winning against the racing type!

so you want my dragonride entry? you can save yourself for L2P and do the shorter version.

  • Aren't they on at the same time?

  • Day 3 pics..

What an idiot. If you are going to use a hand swa on a branch like that at least use a bushman.

  • dragonride's shorter version below. im signed up for the granfondo. but you can decide on the day whichever distance you feel like doing. guess they all have same start times. i believe illy and 50/14 are both in it?

Yep, everyone starts at the same time. When you reach the point where the two routes split you go either left or right. When I did it in 2006 I realised that I'd made a serious mistake in continuing along the grand fondo route about 15 minutes after my initial decision!

Not doing the Chiltern 100 now, am still fucked after my holiday. Did 18 miles last Sunday evening and felt like shit afterwards! Next up for me is the DD.
