  • As for the Sidi's...Bendix has still had cold feet on some occasions with the Sidi's...even with sealskinz underneath.

Get her to loosen the fastenings.

  • Toe covers engaged (over knackered old Sidi Eagles), as of this morning :/

  • Mike Curiak. He swears by his Lake boots. Older versions of the first ones Dammit posted rather than the second 'breathable' ones.

    That's it I know it began with a `C'!

  • Get her to loosen the fastenings.

If you don't have them fairly tight the flippers start sticking out and it's just a big fucking hassle.

  • Start with a notch of ratchet, and a few mm of velcro fronds(?)...

  • true
feet get colder in tight shoes, they need to breath/move about a bit to keep warm

  • It's all about circulation [/library joke].

  • The big Lake boots are most definitely waterproof. I was unconvinced by the low-boots with high collar... it seemed to me that water could be trapped in parts of the shoe and the design would then mean that this is pressed through the material. You can't put water against a material, add pressure and expect water not to get through. The full boot is designed to avoid this, it prevents water traps and I prefer it anyway because the leather on the front would shed any crap thrown up by the front wheel.

Seems my 'Sealskinz' joke was too subtle. :]

  • I thought you were using some kind of weird jargon for Sidi ratchet levers.

If I do an 'lol' now, will it make you feel better?

  • Seems my 'Sealskinz' joke was too subtle. :]

No, it's just that all proper cycling footwear has flippers.

  • People that call certain winter boots and gloves 'overkill' are the people i ignore.
I'd much prefer my feet and hands to be 'too warm' and 'too dry'...and know that i can use those same products anywhere in any conditions without worry.

I've had plenty of gloves that have been classed as 'too warm' for our winters in cycling reviews which were useless for me.

    Ain't that the gospel truth.

  • No it's personal opinion based on someone who knows they have cold hand / feet and can act as a good guide for other people who experience cold extremities. It is not valid description of the life and death of Jesus.

  • yes.

    lol

  • and the gospels might not even be true. given that they were written some time after the event.

  • As usual Tommy is right.
I know from years of miserable cold weather rides that once somebody describes winter cycling clothing as 'overkill' i'm looking at the right section.
Also, unless the person classing the product as overkill can back up his claims with evidence of riding in sub zero temperatures and horrendous storms on more than just a couple of occasions then he's maybe not the ideal person to say whether a certain product is overkill or not in my opinion.
If they're basing it on their own sub ten mile commute which they don't even do if the weather is 'too bad' then a certain product may well 'look' like overkill to them, but if they were wanting to keep warm at 6am every day of winter on a 4O mile ride, or when riding a century and getting stuck in the middle of a ruddy typhoid then they may change their mind. :]

As usual it all comes down to personal choice as to how badly you feel the cold and how badly you would prefer not too.

  • Wait what?

I never says I disagree with Scott, quite the opposite.

  • Exactly, you claimed he was professing something equal to the "good news of Christ" in terms of truthfulness.

Which, taken ironically (or literally, or historically), would be saying he's full of shit. Although I don't think you meant it that way.

Tommy was just saying "your mileage may vary."

  • DK do you wear your boots all the time, or only when it is raining companion animals?

  • Tommy was just saying "your mileage may vary."

Exactly it was just the gospel bit I was tacking the micky out of Ed, don't worry.

  • This Tommy character is the world's least friendly bike forumenger. I'd post more, were it not for his constant lippy attacks on newbs, and impenetratable jargon-laden metabanter.

  • I was looking at these at the Cycle Show:
    http://www.lakecycling.com/mountain-winter-c-1_4_11.html

Way over the top, but totally look like they'd last 3 or 4 winters which makes them not as bad cost-wise.

Apparently Half Pipe near Notting Hill does them or can order them in. http://www.half-pipe.co.uk/

They're available in wide fit for the bigger sizes too (not necessary for me, but seemed good that they cater for different sizes).

Got a pair of these last winter when it was bitter. Some of the best money I ever spent, just need to take care that you don't do the BOA lacing up too tight because then it can dig in (at least on my odd-shaped feet :).

Those, pair of merino socks, comfy feet all winter.

  • Totally waterproof?

  • Diablo's don't get a great review.

    how is

"The Diablo is a good shoe, but just isn’t quite warm or grippy enough for our liking"

    a bad review?
it depends what you want them for
    4 outa 5 ain't too bad
    and this

However, the Sidi Diablo is the most waterproof boot of the three
