  • Supply and demand I guess, my HHSB Jalco rims were more expensive than a set of really good quality rims and they're total budget jobs... The man's got you by the knackers if you wanna rock 27" boots...

    Hey teenslain,

What's your appraisal of the Jalcos then - I'm a bit confused as to what you think of the quality of them (tho i think we're all agreed that they're pricy!).

I just got some NOS Weinmann 27" rims which i was gonna build up for my Allin, but am now sorely tempted by the hhsb deep v look...

    cheers,

    max

What do you mean by 'budget jobs' teenslain? Are they that ropey? I only ask as I'm toying with the idea for my new ride...Probably go with 700s if they're budgety budget

  • I gots 27 1 1/4 on the back, and a 700c on the front.

Looks & feels awesome to ride.

THe ever so slight higher rear end improves geometry and handling considerably.

  • I say budget cuz when I was trying to find somewhere other than SJS that sold them the only place I could find was BikeWorksNYC who offer them as a cheapo rim for a budget HHSB wheelbuild (Jalco laced to Formula hubs)... No eyelets and the quality of finish isn't anywhere near as good as a CXP33, Velocity, DT Swiss 1.2 (or whatever they're called)... I've had no problems with them tho', they roll straight and true... I'd probably buy them again... Hope this helps...
Also the ones I got looked like they'd been in the warehouse for 20yrs, peeling stickers, quite grubby etc. So they may well be NOS, which may explain why I couldn't find them anywhere else...

  • cheers teenslain

    food for thought

  • fuck it!
    just get some arrospokk!

    in 27"??

  • No worries, I'll be here all week... ;)
They're absolutely fine tho', buy with confidence... Just sticks in the throat when they should really be a £20 rim... Someone once told me Velocity could knock up a custom 27" deep-V order, might be worthwhile if enough of us got together... Just a thought, I never chased it up...

    Fuck yeah! With 27 x 1 1/2 tyres! Let's off-road! ;)

  • Just giving this thread the Lazarus treatment as I have bought a Geoffrey Butler frame from ASM which he thinks was originally meant to take 27" wheels.

Do I go for the 27" hoops as a) then my brake will fit, b) the BB height will be as it was meant to be, and c) they may look cool?

Or do I fit 700's so that I can find tyres/rims etc at the drop of a chapeau, rather than hours of internet trawling?

  • i got a pair of 27" mavic module E rims from SJS for my holdsworth. i already posted this, but no-one seems that excited. lovely thin race wheel in 27" - rare as rocking horse shit.

  • ps - that geoffrey butler is sweet. it did have 27" wheels i think - ask cajeta, she was the previous owner.

    27" tyres everywhere.

Michelin world tours/dynamics if your after something cheap.

Or if your after the best street tyre (in my opinion) grippy as fuck and puncture proof.
    Then, conti gatorskins @ £18

    what else do you need?

    27's rule!

Weinmann do a LP18 rim, which is a good cheap double wall rim.

  • How much were they, and do they still have any?

  • I throw it open to fgss- personally I think that 27" might fill the frame better.

  • Neil that looks class!! H

how's the seatpost? It was quite short.

I always loved how that frame seemed to have the slightest forward slope to the top tube.

Maybe go 27" back, and 700c front? Or never, ever take advice from me ever.

  • looks rather nice anyway if you ask me...nice one dude, you haven't wasted asm's frame there..

  • Thanks to LPG for the brake, rear and front wheel.

    EDIT= and tyres.

  • Hi All
This is my first post so please excuse me if I break local rules.
    I've had an amazing find:-
    http://www.zen55445.zen.co.uk/pics/mercian_small.JPG
I'm looking for some 27x1 inch tyres for it. Is this going to be possible and if not, what are my best alternatives?
    Thanks

  • Wow, nice find. A new mercian would cost you a pretty penny.

Check the recent thread called - 27" tyres - Lots of tyres suggestions in there.

  • Did you find a free Mercian? Well, I'm gutted that I didn't stumble across that.

  • But there is only about 5mm difference in size between a 27" and a 700c

    • you can barely tell the difference.

The difference in bead-seat diameters is 8mm, but if you take into account tyre sections, then it does make a noticeable difference. Well it would do if you could pump weinmann's (no hooked beads) over 85-90 P.S.I without shitting yourself!

But going back to the original question, yes of course so-called "obsolete" products are way cooler, due to availability (or lack of).

I couldn't drive a post J reg ('92) car anymore, although of course truely cool is pre 72 free road tax!

persackerly...which is why i've stockpiled a load of 28" bikes and bits

    pffft

Yes laughter is required, but the reason certain parts become "rare" is because in a lot of cases if the product is good, someone "stockpiles" parts, then years later laughs (if he/she can even find them!) and fixed wheel comes around again and fixed threads are almost sought after, esp. "period" components for old bikes
