velocity boy Change batteries often. Too many fecking people out on the road with lights that are barely visible because they're drained their batteries and just because they see a glimmer of an LED at home think it will be bright enough to keep them alive.
Seconded - Two complete sets of rechargable batteries is always the most sensible option.

buy my light and motion's in the classifieds you get flashed by car drivers if they are pointed up to high and other cyclists look on with envy, plus you can see where you are going on unlit streets, great for doing the dynamo without having to ride slower because of lack of viability.

A lack of viability is not a visible alternative.

A little over your budget, but a good saving, I got a set a year ago, and they are great... and rechargable.
you can see loads, and road knobs see you coming too, and you can illuminate signs in the distance when bored!!!!http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=product&productId=605&categoryId=14

One issue I had last winter with some nice bright 10 w halogen light was the fact that the battery pack was strapped to the bike separately. This was ok most of the time but if I was popping in and out of places it got my my tits spending five min taking it on and off every time I locked up. Now I just have a light weight but bright led set up that make me seen well but does nto light up the road.

Evilmonkey I just bought a set of blackburn lights for 20 squids :-
Get good reviews on the most part, look a bit scary, but hopefully give me that "all round, are you blind, how can you not see me" effect...
Will let you know if they're much cop when they arrive.
Just an update on these.
The front light is f'ugly, but thanks whoever suggested mounting it below the bar, works just fine and looks a lot better.
Rear is v bright and v visible from sides (has 2 side orange led's)
happy for £20

fuck! I just replaced a rear cateye with a Mars 3.0. think i've damaged my retina by acccidentally looking in to it. I've never seen such a bright rear light. recommended for a tenner, has a clip so will attach to clothes or bag.

here's the thing - sometime you didn't notice that the batteries is nearly empty until it barely visible, there's countless time that I've forget that my light is usually brighter than it is, until I barely can see the road ahead is when I realise I need to change the battery.
Ribble are doing 10% discount on all lights at the moment if you put in LIGH1108 in the voucher bit at checkout.
