  • i want the hubs i don't like the cranks... and they're black... :P

  • edmundane if u're south edwardes do the system ex variety (basically they're all the same hubs from taiwan marked different names) for about 50quid a pair

them wankers put the price up to over 60 a pair now... pfffftttt

  • £40.. though these are black. Not sure how they differ from mine..

  • OK so here are a list of most hubs
Can people arrange them into an order best to worse, and give comments on this
It's just i have no clue what to get and whether it's worth spending the extra money

    SystemEx
    Miche
    Phil Wood
    Paul Comp
    Dura Ace
    On One
    Campagnolo
    Level
    Surly
    Dia-Compe
    Goldtec
    Suzue
    EAI

    thanks

sorry for hijacking the thread - but i think its actually not hijacking as its relevant

  • Ambrosio
    Formula
    SystemEx
    On One

The above are all the same thing, and the below are pretty much the same thing.

    Surly
    Dia-Compe

  • flick: You should do the list again with prices.. then we can see what the extra cost is we are justifying for ya..

  • not harping on but dia compe are nowhere near surly

  • Fair play (but hopefully not in the bearings)

  • Business Cycles is quite useful for hub info - good pics too - click on photos:

  • It also depends a lot on what you want the hub for.
There's not much point paying for bling bling track hubs with no seals if you're going to ride them through the winter on salted roads.

You've forgotten Royce from that list - possibly the most expensive hubs available.

For general day to day use I'd list them in this order (cost lowest to highest)
System EX/Formula/IRO/Ambrosio/One-One LF (these all seem to be the same hubs made by Quando)
    Goldtec
    Paul/Phil
Royce (with road bearings rather than track bearings - available as an option)

Level seem to be ridiculously heavy.
Surly are over priced for what you get.

There are a lot of different models of Suzue - but there are "better" hubs for the money.

I reckon Goldtec are probably the best balance of cost/performance. Especially if you get BETD to build the wheels for you. They'll custom anodise the hubs for you if you ask them nicely enough.

  • bump - apologies

Was in a LBS last week, and asked after fixed/track Hubs - out of interest more than anything...

He whipped out a quite angular 'Quando' hub, that I had not come across before. Seemed competitively priced - less than GoldTec... Any experience anyone?

(I note above that someone said that Quando are behind System Ex et al, but the styling of this seemed quite different...)

  • 'quando' branded hubs are no good, in my experience. similar to formula hubs or dia-compe, but much lower quality materials/workmanship, and much lower tolerances in the the threading. seen a few rears lose their threads after a few months use (changed cogs one to many times?). they're similar (workmanship) quality to suzue junior hubs, but without the looseball bearings. i believe they're the hubs that come stock on a bianchi pista (or used to).

as far as other hubs, suzue promax sb hubs have been problematic with getting the bearings out, since they have such narrow bodies, so they're not that good for beating on, especially at they're price.
surlys are great, had a pair for 2 years, replaced the bearings only once, nice'n easy, strong hubs and surlys a great company to deal with.
phils are by far the best. their stock bearings are awesome, strong as hell, rode through two winters on the same bearings (in boston, which gets much, much worse than london) and they were still fine. they also look really good :)
formula/system ex/etc are pretty good, nice and economically priced and still decent hubs, that look good and will last. had a one strip out, but it was old, so def got my moneys worth.

  • those quando one can do the job but don't pay more than 15quid for it. depends what you want condor are selling some dia compe hubs under their own mark for £20 front and £25 rear only comes in 32h and black though. considering that they're essentially the same as the gran compe hubs which are £40 front and £45 rear it's a steal.

i've heard that the ambrosio/formula/system ex hubs are actually made by quando. just better than those cheap gaff they name after themselves. and are actually very decent hubs. good for the winter i reckon.

  • almost 100% sure quando make planetX and on-one hubs too.

  • I have a set of quando branded hubs, had minor problems with slipping cogs and odd sized lockrings. I started on a suzue cheapo one, you basically get what you pay for with this. The cog slipped all the time it was impossible to get it tightened properly and I had to re pack the bearings every month. But I think the wheel cost me 50 quid fully built up from deeside cycles so can't really complain. Now have Phils which are a work of art and the only problem I've had was that the wheel could slip in chrome dropouts, buying the chrome domes resolved this.

Profile are bringing out track hubs that look bombproof, the lockring on them is massive. I have heard so many people say they would get Goldtechs if they were in silver, can't belive they haven't yet.

  • the guys at goldtec can't even keep up with the supply of the black hubs i'd guess a "feature request" in silver would be too much for them to take...

  • condor have some new black branded ones in for about £25 each if i remember rightly. look like dia compes but with less fancy nuts and axles.

  • My next hub is going to be a goldtech. Very popular with Audax riders aparently as well as couriers both groups will put on the miles and strain their hubs and if it is good enough for them it is plenty good enough for me.

  • I would go for Goldtech's too but the 45mm chainline is putting me off - I currently have formula hubs at 42mm.

  • System Ex or Dia Comp Gran Compes Hubs?

  • dia comps

  • cheers
