  • yeah, that is another concern, the chain tension... supposedly, if i put the shimano freewheel with more tooths, I will need a new chain, since my current one is already at the max tension (i think).

I will search that transmission database, thanks! :)

Do you mean your wheel is all the way in, rather than tension? If you go up by 1 tooth on the freewheel you won't need much extra room so you may not need a new chain.
I also doubt you would have any chainline issues as freewheels must be fairly similar?
And one last point, why don't you just buy another 1/8 freewheel (could even try a Dicta one so it is exactly the same?

  • White industries freewheel work with either size.

  • what do you mean that freewheel is 3/32? what makes you think so?
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=7805 same thing cheaper.

  • lol @ dancing james :D

    1) yeah, the wheel is all the way in into the dropouts, no more room to adjust tension.
    2) I dunno anything about frewheel similarities, my guess is more tooths = bigger size wheel = less tension needed? or am i wrong?
    3) that can be done, only if I find a good quality freewheel. also I wanted at least a couple more tooths to even up the uphills (lisbon has plenty of those, y'know).

  • the shimano one is quality.

  • So if I buy this shimano

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Shimano_BMX_Freewheel/5300005982/

with 17 or 18T I won't have a problem with my current crankset? althought the chain has wider spacings?

    ok, it's set then :)

    thanks for your help.

I run this setup for commuting purposes - 17T Shimano 3/32 freewheel with 1/8 chain and chainring for when the baby seat is on the back. Flipflop to EAI 1/8 fixed for when no baby around. Both work absolutely fine.

cool. so the 17T freewheel gives you less resistence pedalling. You think an 18T would work with the same chain and chainring?

    the shimano one is quality.

    thanks ;)

  • I'm all like getting on with the freewheel and that in the one eighth measurings this thread is well good at letting me know I'm doing the right things even when I don't always be knowing. Innit?

  • i don't think i fully understood your post, but it was funny anyway :)

  • if you are getting a bigger freewheel you might as well get a new 1/8" chain (e.g. kmc z510hx), then it doesn't matter if you accidentally buy a 3/32" or 1/8" freewheel as all will work.

alternatively, if you are going up by one tooth, you could get a halflink.

  • Cool, but whatever you do don't get a white chain. We use coloured chains to identify corpse rapists in London.

  • ...and chain are 1/8th, you're golden.

    Mika? Urgh.

  • if you're after a cheap 1/8 chain i'd recommend the base model Izumi - can get this for a tenner or so

i've got both this and the njs super V toughness, and not much between them really

    O_o

  • Ok, my dumb question now please.
I just got this ring not that cheap but i'm going for the HHSB look in classic chic, so beat me to it.

...and it is a 3/32. I really prefer to know before going on a 1/8 chain, if the market offers
    good quality 3/32 SS/track chains.
    So far I've found:

    *Token Track Chain
    *KMC Z610HX 3/32" BMX/Track Chain (Nickel) (112L)

    *IZUMI BMX TRACK Chain 3/32"
    *KMC 3/32" RUST PROOF

Would like to know who has experience with any/other models that might be useful.
    My drivetrain:
wheels - ARAYA 430 laced to Dura Ace track LF
DA cog - DA cranks - DA ring (^^that one... 3/32^^)

  • Argh man, you've made me do a megalol! that is hilarious, thanks. We are golden!
