We mostly run a not-too dissimilar gearing to you guys, as far as I can tell, 46x17 is pretty popular here - remember, we have to ride down the hills, as well as up, so a super-low gearing is counter-productive for about 50% of the time.
It just takes loads of practice and you find that you have to get less far forward to get skidding. I also find skidding with risers/bullhorns a heck of a lot easier that with drops, for some reason. The trick is unweighting the rear wheel, like in trials when you are 'stepping up' onto an obstacle. Just keep working at it and it will come.

46x17!
If God rode fixed, he would ride 46x17.

i agree on the riser / bullhorn tip - not only do bullhorns facilitate getting that weight off the rear wheel, but both bars dont come with pre-installed knee-whackers, aka, the "drops" in drops.
(ps. assuming, turpe, your in sf - thats why i loved the haight street wiggle - that fuck off drop into castro down 17th is reason enough.)

I'm on 47-18, which is about 70 I think. Easy peasy to skid.

If God rode fixed, there'd be no sodding cars on the road.
Nor red lights.
Nor coppers with nothing better to do.If God rode fixed, there's be no punctures and no need to oil.
There's be no puddles, so no mudguards.
Nor fuck-wit pedestrians.Nor, nor, nor...

i dunno, i reckon it'd be boring without cars.
fun for a few days, perhaps.

If God were more of the OT (Testament, not Topic: relax Lord VB), fire n brimstone type, and he rode fixed...
... now that would be fun. -

no cars? YIKES! that sounds like copenhagen! or one of those little one-goat islands off greece... skids for days! (until you hit the goat shit and get the wobbles)

Yes, I am and yes, the wiggle is great. Although sprinting from GG Park down Oak (catching all the timed lights, and passing all the traffic) is my personal favourite, especially if you're going all the way to Van Ness and you go up-and-over the steep part near Steiner.

Trust Kanye to get a custom, one-off Vigorelli with mirrored decals and a left-sided drivetrain.

try and find wet roads, they help alot, then pull up and push down, you have to do both and commit, it won't lock up instantly but will stay locked once skidding
also car parks have no grip, if its shiny concrete nice place to try
hope this helps

i also found the first time i could finally skid was on wet slick concrete. it's also quite important to slightly unweight the back wheel as you do the push/pull thing i find (lift bum up a bit). now i can do it fine on dry thanks to my contis too :D

i find an easy way to unweight the back wheel is to use the front brake at the same time as you pull the skid.
-
• #97
new tires take a bit of wearing in too, my armadillos were a pain in the legs to skid at first.

wet grass. easy and soft.

not too wet, i tried this and couldn't pedal as there was too much water.
mos def. i think it also has alot to do with distance needed - ie, in those skid comps, entry is a 300 meter skid (FUCK ME), but the mash kdis drop them in for portions of seconds in full sitting position, but when they really go for it they get up and into it. yorgo (in his polo gears) almost always does his sitting, where as andy (fgl) get up and foreward for that long skid-to-180.
