  • Ooh I bet you even ride brakeless!

  • I kind of want a 19t cog if anyone has one going spare... I have a miche 17t unused or an EAI 17t (which is the kind i'd preferably like) that has been used for about 2 days.

46x17 is nice but i think i might wanna go to 19!

  • Raleigh was 46x17 and I moved to 44x17 which was beaut! Now it's in pieces unridden :S

  • eek-a-Mouse Ooh I bet you even ride brakeless!

yeah do not ride with him on hangover rides...he is reckless. ;)
That cabbie from Sunday probably is still to scared to drive again

  • 50x14

  • Ha Illy, someone had to say it!!

John tell me more about your reckless behaviour...

  • damn you beat me to it

  • I heard for the MASHSF part II - the final return - they will be riding 50x14...

  • How about a trials-style 1:1.1 ratio (22x20 or something!) Super-skids but no good for actually going anywhere.

  • what you want is probably a fixed wheel with gears :)

  • Going anywhere is over rated, just milling aroundis where it's at.

  • Just get front wheel drive, lock the back wheel up and drag it around.

  • Danzel what you want is probably a fixed wheel with gears :)

like the crazy two speed peugeot mentioned elsewhere recently! Still can't work out what was happening there...

  • I think that it is possible to have a different gear for forwards and backwards on a fixed wheel.

If you make a fixed by having two chains and two freewheels, each one fixed in a different direction, one on either side. By careful adjustment of chain length, you could get a much larger sprocket on the 'backward' freewheel than on the forward one.

Can anyone see a reason why that wouldn't work?

  • yes, it's a crap idea :P

  • Lol - is there anything Sheldon's site doesn't cover in the world of bikes?

    arrospok ??

  • Yeah Tommy
you could get a free/free flip flop and different chain rings on each side... that would work, with a half-link chain so you could get finer chain length adjustment

Alternatively, just get on with it and learn to skid!... I ride 48:16 and its not such a big deal, you just have to be brave enough to shift your weight forwards , and do it at the right moment, cos its finer with a bigger gear.

  • Sheldon's setup is a bit different, he has a freewheel on one side and two fixed gears on the other, using a welded Sturmey Archer hub. No good for skidding at all. In fact, in the article he states that the drive train will bind if used in reverse. Not that skidding is actually reversing, but...

It does prove the 'two drive train' thing though. Like Jos' bike behind his stand at Rollapoluza.

But Jos' bike, as far as I could make out, simply had two identical fixed drivetrains, with one being redundant. In fact, I expect that one of the drivetrains on that bike would never be used - it would be pretty impossible to get an equal chain tension on both sides.

  • but obviousrry arrospok skid better

  • I use 52 x 18 and can skid fine it's all practice.

Not a good idea to skid too much though unless you have a stake in a tyre company

  • Tommy - you're as hard as nails. Do you want a race up Highgate?

  • The Highgate race totally has to start again next year. It kept raining on thursday eves this summer....
